What do you guys think of the Ruger SR556 (or other piston AR's) for 3 gun?

If you are planning on getting any firearm with the intentions of lots of practice and spending a fair bit of money going to competitions, before you buy figure out where you will be able to get parts, how long will it take to get them and will you be able to get parts a few years from now. I know when I travel to competitions I can beg, borrow or buy parts for DI rifles. Forgot your BCG? there will be lots of spares. Need a part and have a comp next week? can you get a decent replacement part inside a week?
Don't believe anyone's hype, every part of every gun will wear out in use. Some last longer than others, and for everyone who gets super lucky, someone gets far less than lucky.

Haters gonna hate.
I owned and ran a SR556E for a while. It was flawless in operation, very easy to clean and extremely accurate. It was a tad front heavy, mostly due to a heavier weight barrel, but it didn't string shots when it was hot either. I wouldn't even look at the FB model: weight, cost and no real upside.

As mentioned the trigger was very heavy, with a Timney it was magic.

The E model was just under a pound heavier than a pencil D.I. gun. Make sure and handle one, but they are excellent.

Yeah it's popular to not clean your gun, like a fad - some of us still prefer to do it.
I don't use the Chris Costa grip either.

Can't really argue that.
I now have a DI AR.
But the Ruger was a performer, it's just never gonna fly with AR elitists.

There's nothing to "fly" its a solution to a non existent problem. The perceived benefits are minimal and not needed. As Yohann160 posted(as well as others) the argument about being easier to clean is a gimmick and based on false data. Same goes for the "hot bolt" bs that so many eagerly regurgitate. Your post said it well, the Ruger(as an example) is front heavy, had a sh*tty trigger and was overall a full pound heavier than a DI gun and cost more, for what gain???

Piston guns for the AR platform were developed for one reason. By request of the USN for their SEALs. Leave it with them.

Unless you are about to leap into Afghanistan/Iraq, each one of us should ask himself, is it really worth the added cost?

Edit: It appears that their might be some complaint with the shorter barreled M4. I wonder if this 'affliction' is also present or not present on the full length barrel upper?

I love it when people take a piece of equipment of some kind of sacrilege or personal insult.
Some people like piston AR's. Who cares? Water cooling on Porsche 911's wasn't needed either - doesn't mean they suck.
Run whatever you like and have fun.

The only piston AR I've shot was the H&K.. UBER-reliable, but a bit front heavy as noted. That's the kinda gun I'd choose if I had to head for the hills. For competition, I'd definitely go DI for the light weight, inherent accuracy and availability of parts. DD ftw

x2. If you like it, buy it. Who gives a rats azz what anyone else thinks. It's your money. Plus there are fan boys for both DI and piston.

Who is taking anything as an insult? The issue here is the validity of the piston system as in whether or not it was/is needed and the BS rhetoric that gets tossed around supporting it. I'm only interested in facts and the truth, I don't care what anyone spends their money on.

At least Ive owned the rifle the OP asked about instead of shooting down a rifle Ive never shot.

I also owned an M&P that didn't have a forward assist OR a dust cover!

Oh noooooo!
