I don't have dreams of going to Africa though...
You dont need a magnum there either unless you are going after thick skinned game or lion!
.30-06 is the most popular cartidge in southern africa because it works well! Most resident hunters in countires like Namibia and South Africa shoot .30-06's, .308's, .270's, 7x57, 7x64 etc. Sure, some do use the faster magnums, especially in open county.
Whats works in North America will work in Africa plain and simple. There is not an African antelope that cannot be killed cleanly with a .30-06 pushing a good quality 180gr bullet. If its good for Elk its good for Kudu, Wildebeest, water buck and anything on down. Eland are a bit of an exception as they are huge but I have killed one with a .30-06 as have some of my friends who also have used from .308-.375 on them. Last season a friend killed 2 wildebeest and a zebra quite cleanly, 1 shot each, with a .270. He was patient and made broadside shots.
I understand a visiting hunter wanting more penetration and clout to help mitigate any errors but we all know that placement is key. You simply dont need a .375 to kill African antelope. Its a superb cartridge and a great nostalgic choice or for a one gun hunter pursuing antelope and a buff or ele for example but is not 'neccessary' in terms of power for plains game, despite what some magazines seem to publish.
