What do you use for a "Non-Magnum?"

I don't have dreams of going to Africa though...

You dont need a magnum there either unless you are going after thick skinned game or lion!
.30-06 is the most popular cartidge in southern africa because it works well! Most resident hunters in countires like Namibia and South Africa shoot .30-06's, .308's, .270's, 7x57, 7x64 etc. Sure, some do use the faster magnums, especially in open county.

Whats works in North America will work in Africa plain and simple. There is not an African antelope that cannot be killed cleanly with a .30-06 pushing a good quality 180gr bullet. If its good for Elk its good for Kudu, Wildebeest, water buck and anything on down. Eland are a bit of an exception as they are huge but I have killed one with a .30-06 as have some of my friends who also have used from .308-.375 on them. Last season a friend killed 2 wildebeest and a zebra quite cleanly, 1 shot each, with a .270. He was patient and made broadside shots.

I understand a visiting hunter wanting more penetration and clout to help mitigate any errors but we all know that placement is key. You simply dont need a .375 to kill African antelope. Its a superb cartridge and a great nostalgic choice or for a one gun hunter pursuing antelope and a buff or ele for example but is not 'neccessary' in terms of power for plains game, despite what some magazines seem to publish.

.303British does everything I need it to do.

And I believe that much more improvement in performance is available to me if I practice shooting more with this cartridge than if I just replace it with any other.

30-06, .270 Win. Never saw the need for anything else. Hell, I don't even use magnum loads in my muzzleloader.

For deer I use a 7x57, 260 rem or .308. Have used .270, 30-06, 300 savage, 257 Roberts for deer. Will use .250 savage and .303 savage on deer sometime in future just because. Now use .35 whelen or 300 H + H for moose and elk although the 7x57 may go moose hunting this year.

After owning several Magnums I have settled in with the classic .308 as my goto round. I now love and will only own the classics. I prefer a short action so most firearms that grace my safe will be .308 and not .30-06

I hope to get a .223 later this year and maybe a .375 H&H in the future.

.308, unless I feel like using the magnum. Do I need to use a magnum, of course not, it depends where I'm going, potential shot distance, what I'm hunting and how I feel. It's nice to have choices!:)

My fave none magnums are the 30-06 and the 270Win.
Love hunting with both of them.

Also have a bunch of lever stuff...fun too!
My 348 browning 71 is my lever fave....Love packing that gun!

BTW the 25-06 is a magnum in every sense of the word, but name!
