What do you use for Grouse??

Well because I shoot the majority on the wing my shotty of choice is a Ithica 12g with a chopsawed 20" barrel so I can use cheapy shells, 7 1/2 preferably:)

O/U 12 ga. - #7 1/2 or 8

SxS 16 ga. - #6

Several different .22LR - hollow points (36 gr. or 40 gr. brand doesn't matter to me)

Once with a 7mm Remington Magnum - 175gr Remington Core-Lokt (worked great, no feathers, no guts, just a clean breast and the heart).

Oh yeah, sometimes a .410 - #4 is all I have right now.

I'm not sure yet, but I know if I'm going to have to do allot of Deep brush hiking in Black Bear land, I'm packing the 12 gauge or the Winchester 94 30/30. :D

We have Spruce Grouse here in Labrador and they can sometimes be very dumb. I like to take them with head shots with my 10/22 and Fed. hollowpoints. When I'm hunting Ruffed Grouse in Ont. or Que. I like my Rem. 11-87 12ga. with 3 1/4 dram #7 1/2's.

12 gauge with 7/8 oz handloads of 7.5 shot at about 1025 fps.
Quiet, no recoil, and effective.
I want to try using a 20 gauge over shot card in the bottom of the shotcup and see if I can't work up a 3/4 oz load.
Not to mention these give a better pattern than a 20 gauge or a 410.

You guys use guns to kill grouses-es? I feel like such a hillbilly  My buddies and I have always used rocks to git 'em! Ever since I can remember. They're so dumb you usually get more than one throw (if you miss, of course).

My dad used to use his old remington pump .22, head shots every time. I suppose if I were to use a gun, I'd use a .22 as well. I've never even fired a .410, so I have no idea how effective it'd be. Rimfire all the way!

Easy enough to get head shots most of the time... body shots with the right ammo aren't too bad either. :D

This set up here is an AWESOME carrying rifle. 5lbs loaded with sling.

I have heard that the 17hmr works real well on sharptails that are out in a stubble field, where you wouldn't have any chance of walking up on them. Think I'll give that a try next season.FS

.22 in the head if I'm close enough and the dumb birds keep their head still. If it's too far for the head I try for the shoulders just under the base of the neck so to hit the vitals but miss the breast meat. It works well.
