What do you use for Grouse??

20 Gauge SXS with 7 1/2 shot works for me ( Walmart Fed. & Winchester are about $22.00 per 100). I used to use my Mod. 77 Winchester .22 But th 20 gauge is more reliable:D

Most grouse I shoot are "incidentals" while deer hunting. .270 - head shots.
If intentionaly hunting grouse I use my Savage 24C .22/20 w/ 6 or 7 1/2's. It has a short barrel and comes up nice.

As to grouse being stupid the spruce grouse are, they fly into a tree and you can pitch rocks at them until you hit them,Ruffed grouse and sharptails I would not say that about.Once a ruffy takes off They are hard to get.I used a benelli nova this past year ,took one with 3.5" bb load,12 with # 6 ,and one with a slug.Took his head right off, good thing too.Keep my shotgun handy for bears and take home chicken supper when I can.

X2 for the Spruce Grouse but those Ruffed Grouse have after burners:D Throw in some heavy cover and watch out. I like my 11-87 for those conditions. Usually the first 2 shots are to just clear the brush out of the way;)

My Savage 24H-DL, .22 over 20ga. Great for Prairie Chicken and Ruffed Grouse. Been using it for nearly forty years. Neatest little gun.

SXS's are my favorites, but any shotgun will do. Last year I got birds with:

PUMPS:
Winchester 1897 16 ga.
Winchester 1897 12 ga.

SXS:
Savage Fox B 12 ga.
Lefever G 12 guage (2 1/2" black powder)
Sauer & Sohn 12 ga. (pre-war)

OTHER:
N.E.F. Pardner 20 ga. single

There were a couple of other shotguns I used, but I can't remember which ones.

For sharptail, I always use 5-shot in the tight-choked barrel and 6 in the more open barrel (or 5 for the first shot and 6 for the second - in the case of pumps or others).

For ruffies, I prefer 7 1/2 and then 6-shot, in that order. With the heavier loads and larger shot sizes for sharptail, I tend to lean towards the 12 gauge and heavier guns. For the ruffies, I like slightly shorter barrels, smaller gauges, and lighter guns overall.

This year I'll have a couple of new 20 gauge SXS's to play with. I have a feeling they'll become my favorites.

I usually use an insert made out of stainless steel. It has a hole machined in the back that accepts a .32 ACP round. I have one in .300 Win Mag and one in .300 Wby Mag.
