What do you use for Grouse??

.22

Forget the shotgun. Take your hunting dog to scare them up then shoot them out of trees with any .22, preferably shooting .22 shorts.

Usually shoot them with a 22 rimfire, try to take head shots if practical, otherwise will take careful body shots to avoid that delicious breast meat. I was 15 for 17 shots last fall. Regards, Eagleye.

First choice for more sport, 22 winchester 490 22 semi auto for head shots. In a hurry to "git some" used SxS external hammers 12 Baikal. However I know, the Ithaca 20 gauge M37 Featherlight will be used in the future,as THE shotgun of choice!

22 LR with a scoped rifle. Takes heads clean off. I've used my 260 Rem too. It's accurate and takes heads clean off. My brother thought he'd give it a try but he ain't so good a shot... we had beak and chicken legs after he took his shot!

Why not use the 12 gauge with 7/8 oz loads.
7/8 oz of shot is the same whether it be from a 12 or a 20,
and the 12 is going to give a much nicer pattern and shorter shot cloud.

Some grouse can be so dumb that a good rock will do...

A slingshot works well too...

An air rifle makes it a bit more challenging...

Real guns feel like cheating...:)

If I'm hunting with a 30-06, I use a .32ACP insert for grouse. It's accurate enough for head shots and surprizingly quiet. Got one in 9mm Parabellum for the .35 Whelen, too.

The Hammond Game Getters are also quite good and are a similar solution for the .338 Win Mag and the 6.5x55 Swede. They use swaged lead balls (basically buckshot) and are powered by a Remington Power Hammer "shot" cartridge (similar to a .22 blank).

What to use on Grouse

A little bit of butter, dill and garlic salt and pepper to taste;)

Every once in a while, we come across something that, "makes our day." This is the first time I've looked at this thread & your comment just made it for me.:D :D That's good, I'll have to remember that one. For what to use to get Grouse when hunting just for them, my 'rainy' day Grouse gun is a Ruger Red label 20ga Mag with either standard or magnum loads, #6 shot or smaller. My 'sunny' day gun is a 12ga English SxS :) that takes 2.5" ammo & in that, #6 or smaller shot in Eley ammo or handloads. Sitting on the dash of the truck during Moose hunting trips, to & from hunting areas is a single shot, Ranger 410, standard length shells, or sometimes, a Savage 22/410 OU. Again, usually #6 or smaller shot.
