Even if it backed out why was the firing pin able to compress it and cause the discharge.You were very lucky . I would be tearing that bolt apart to see what is happening in there.What does the face of the bolt look like ??
There are two issues here, and I don't believe that they are related, the popped primer and the AD. I'll just discuss the ammo.
~~~
High pressure is the cause.
~ Correct cartridge?
~ Check case length.
~ Check cartridge OAL.
~ Check loading data and compare with the loads.
All of that ^^^
From the pic, it looks like the firing pin hit the primer. The question is, was the firing pin stuck in the forward position when KDX closed the bolt, or did his trigger mechanism let go just as he closed the bolt ?
Since he's not telling us that the bolt handle broke his hand as it came flying back, I'm going to guess it's the latter.
If I were you KDX, I'd be looking for trigger group wear/trigger set up too light, and things of that nature.
I'm confused. Even if any of these are wrong. How would these cause the firing pin to strike the primer by closing the bolt only??
From the pic, it looks like the firing pin hit the primer, and it wasn't a loose primer getting crushed in there or something like that. The question is, was the firing pin stuck in the forward position when KDX closed the bolt, or did his trigger mechanism let go just as he closed the bolt ?
If I were you KDX, I'd be looking for trigger group wear/trigger set up too light, and things of that nature. Did you get the bolt handle completely locked in place, or was it only partially closed ? If it was only partially closed, that would explain the primer coming out, and the horror show looking case. If it was completely locked down, then I haven't got a good explanation for you.
Give us a really detailed description of the chain of events if you can remember exactly what happened/when.
I think two separate issues happened at one time. Since this is the Reloading forum I only directed my comments to the ammo. If and when the OP starts a thread in the Gunsmithing forum I'll direct my thoughts to the AD issue.
The rifle firing wouldn't cause the high pressure. Firing out-of-battery would have more damage. I think that there is an ammo issue and a rifle issue but that one did not cause the other.
Too funny someone who never goes out of forum. Kudos to you![]()
