What Happened to Ruger's M77 line?

My 1991 tang safety M77 in 7x57. It's on my "do not sell" list...

As a bonus, it's turned a purpley hue. :)
This one shoots!

I am chatting with a fellow who has an old Zytel .338 model, he's had no interest in it after listing for a few weeks. Might chop it down a little and put some irons on it. Tough as hell.

Yes join the cult

One of us! One of us!

I’ve always liked the m77 mkII. Every one I’ve had was well made and they have all the features I like. Some really cool variations of them and the Hawkeye over the years.

CRF, swing safety, bases machined into the action. What’s not to love?

Couldn’t say when they were imported though but PR has working grade m70s from 1300-1500 bucks. If the Ruger is coming in at the same price the casting vs milling debate comes into play for sure.

Edit: might be old imports but this is nothing to sneeze at https://store.prophetriver.com/ruge...etic-blued-22-barrel-1-ruger-rings-mfg-47111/

M77 mkI always seemed like a bit of a confused design to me.

I was unsure of this one when I bought it but it is on my never sell list now. Left hand compact 338rcm. My little thumper.

I bought a M77 MkII stainless in 300 win off the EE. Was advertised as a 1/2” shooter. I was skeptical to say the least. I’ll be damned if it isn’t the most accurate gun I own. More accurate than I can shoot. Truly impressed with the value for the dollar that rifle has delivered. Those steel Ruger rings are tough too.

I had a tang safety standard weight M77 30-06 back in the mid-80's. It was remarkably accurate. Using a 4X Leupold I got 1-inch groups at 200 yards with a variety of loads all day long. But it was not a lucky gun. Everytime I took it out hunting, I got nothing. So I sold it off. I later learned that not all Ruger M77 rifles were known for such accuracy. Perhaps I should have kept it, but it just wasn't a lucky gun.

I have seen a bunch of gunsite scouts for sale but no 308 and they discontinues the 223 which they should really release the 308 and 223 using AR mags they would sell a bizzzzillion if they used AR mags. The ones I have seen are like the 350 legend and 450 bushmaster but haven't seen a 308 in years now. The ruger ranch is selling very well especially when they moved to the AR mag versions

Don’t Quote me but,

I believe Ruger is only doing certain calibers and configurations of the M77 Hawkeye Currently. On a year by year basis they are only making and selling certain layouts as demand for more than that was not what it used to be.

The race to the bottom is sad. Thankfully, CZ still makes a quality all blued and walnut model 557 (with excellent sights) for under $1400.

Sort of funny to say this when they recently switched to a cheaper design for the same price? They lost me there

i think as the same as for the mkii and cz550 nobody was willing to pay more for those great rifles. they will come back as the model 70 from winchester. called classic for a way more money ...

Still a quality push feed that in many ways is smoother and more refined. I have both. BTW, it's been many years since the design change. The 557 is truly an excellent rifle and design.

I'll tell you what is sad, was the bankruptcy and subsequent purchase of Brno Arms by CZ. CZ resurrected Brno for a few short years, between 2009 and 2014 (re-hiring the best Brno employees), then shut it down completely. Aside from the historic model 21/22 through to the 600 series, Brno made some great quality break action single and double shot rifles. Demand for that sort of quality wasn't there--and way too costly for CZ to keep going. The new trend is budget junk and very expensive "classic" lines.

Kurgan I’m guessing you have owned every BRNO/CZ bolt action model!

You would be well equipped to judge any changes in quality. From a purely design perspective they have just been going downhill in my books. One man’s opinion worth the paper it’s printed on.

I liked the looks of those BRNO/CZ combo and double rifles. I also had a “ BRNO K1” from another manufacturer, looks like their sight is down. Not sure if it was based off a gun made by the state owned factory. Not a nice piece like yours

Ruger as a manufacturer will always hold my interest because they don’t seem to mind coming out with some unique stuff. I’d be curious if anyone has bought an m77 recently, did it come with both the pic rail and the Ruger rings?
