What is quieter? CCI Quiet or CB Short

The Quiet ones. Out of a rifle they're barely louder than a pellet gun. CBs still have a decent crack to them.

Not sure I've tried the CB shorts (I might have some in the lock box now that I think of it...? :) ) but I used allot of CB Longs years ago. Based on my crappy memory, I THINK lister is right. The "Quiet-22" might be a little quieter. Definitely more readily available.

Which is quieter?
CCI Quiet 22lr or CCI CB Short?

What's the quietest readily available 22 ammo that is reliable on small game?

I did a "loudness" test on this with my Henry a couple of weeks back. Shooting alternate shots with my kid. Didn't need hearing protection for either.

Honest answer is "couldn't tell". Both really quiet and seemed about the same.

For hunting I would definitely go CCI Quiet Segmented though. Same loud as the normal Quiets but a very nice expanding bullet which does a lot more damage than Shorts would do. More expensive than the normal Quiets ($10 for 50) but same ballistics as the Quiets. So plink with the Quiets until you are used to them - then shoot for real with the Quiet Segmented.

Question about that^. I have some of the segmented myself, and while I've never hunted even my barn pigeons with it..I have a hard time imagining it would/could expand moving so slow...but if they actually DO... :) Have you tested to see if they actually break-up on impact? Not doubting really, just curious. It's what they're meant to do after all.

The big difference between CB long's and Quiet is bullet weight, speed is the same but the longs are 29 g and the Quiets are 40 g

They don't so much mushroom like a classic dum-dum as break up and spread out.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJqPbGXw-nE - is very good.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDokamMFPoI - fast forward to 2:40 for a ballistic gel test.

My utterly unscientific test on 2l pop bottles filled with water definitely showed this happening. Impressionistic results on Rabbits convinced me that they were worth the extra - they do seem to do more damage.

If anyone wants to get actual numbers, SPL meters are available for iPhones free. I have an audiocontrols mobile tools app. Has a dB meter

CB's out of my BSA Martini with the long heavy barrel literally sounded just a little louder than someone spitting. Even indoors hearing protection was clearly not required. That changed though when we shot them through shorter and lighter barrels.

I've tested loudness between the CB's and the Quiets before. I forget the DB reading but they were within 2dB of each other from a 18" barrel. The CB's were significantly quieter from a 24" barrel.

I find the Quiets to be more accurate
