What is the best brush gun you've ever used?

I would have to say........ when I had one was my #5 Jungle Carbine.
Now it's a toss up between my model 94 thuddy thuddy or my model 88/.308.
Both with the Fool Proof peep sight.

Only One..... not going to happen... Marlin 1895 Guide Gun Stainless in 45/70 second would my my any one of my Marlin 336's or Winchester 1894's in 30-30.

"I think the original question referred to what calibre/bullet would best go through brush to kill an animal seen screened through the brush"

Not sure I see this "between the lines".

For a "close range fast handling rifle/cartridge combo" (brush gun) to handle deer and moose, I like my Sav. 99 in .300 savage with a 2 to 7 power scope.

I have a Rem. 7600 in .35 whelen with a low power variable as well.

Check the first post again,
"What is the best brush gun you've ever used?"
"Let's say deer and moose hunting at ranges from 20 - 60 yards."
'Brush gun' virtually states there will be occasions where shots through some brush will be the order of the day. Performance and preferences under those circumstances is the question.

I have read where more than one gun writer has set up targets behind brush and blazed away. The results I have seen were that calibre/bullet didn't make a great deal of difference. It appeared a 45-70, or similar, didn't do any better than a 308/30-06.

every account/test that i have read over the years stated that slower, heavier bullets do much better at defeating brush. spitzer bullets performed much worse than round-nose, and flat-nosed bullets fared the best.

most tests show the 12g slugs coming out on top with big, heavy flat-nosed .45-70s and their ilk coming in a very close second.

theres a reason .45-70 is probably the most popular brush caliber and its not just because they come in lever actions :)

its also why im more terrified of shotgun hunters not in tree stands using 12g slugs than anything else.

Had various 45-70's.........Guide guns etc.
My Favourite was a Marlin 95 "Cowboy" in 45-70......Dam did it shoot well.
Had the lightweight octagon barrel...Carried well and swung nice ! I actually preferred it over the stubby guide models.

500 Grain hardcasts at 1500 fps.....dropped BlackBears like a Sledgehammer:cool:

Like an Idiot I sold it.............

I have never taken game with any bush rifle that I have owned, but I always liked my Ruger Semi auto carbine in 44 mag. I'll have to buy another when I see the right deal.

Second that I am looking forward to useing it this weekend , deer opens on saturday . Its like a 10 22 that pack the punch of a muzzeloader .:D

Had great success with my old .308 blr and although not moose worthy my ruger mini 30 works well on those whitetails.both wear a baush and lomb elite 3000 2x-7x.

Ruger .44 carbine...both the old carbine and the new deerfield....I own both.

The best all arounf has to be the deerfield. Not because the gun itself is any better, but I put a DMS 1-4 illuminatd reticle scope on it. At 1X (it's a true 1X) it acts just like a reflex sight (eotech, etc) and is SUPER fast on target. The 240 grainers buck the brush really well...and make nasty holes in whatever they hit. Having five rounds at your disposal is nice, and the carbine is mild enough to pull off double taps if the situation warrants it.

Savage Model 1920 in 300 Savage. Weird little peep sight on the tang, but she was light and shot beautifully. Haven't seen one since, and the one I shot will never be for sale.

Oh well, as for my own rifles? My 6.5 Swede aint bad but the Savage 99 with a Williams Peep sight seems to take the cake.

I like my Martini it's been re-barreled to 577 snider 105grs. ffg and a 725gr. cast bullet hit like a ton of bricks. with a set af pedersoli peep sights .
