What is the best brush gun you've ever used?

This is the best I could come up with and it works like a charm.


BLR 358 with a Leupold Ultralight fixed 2.5x scope with a heavy duplex reticle.

200gr RN Core-lokt handloaded to 2500fps:)
 
I've used several. A BLR in 308 with a 4x leupy, marlin gun in 45/70 with peep sights, my second favorite is a ruger frontier scout rifle in 7mm-08 and a Leupold EER 4x scope in a scout mount it handles very well. My favorite is my Savage 99 in 300 savage with a Marble peep sight.


ETA Almost forgot another favorite is my Ruger #1 in 30-06 witn a 22" barrel and a VXII 2-7.

Winchester 94 in 30-30, I'll bet this rifle has shot as many deer in Canada then the Lee Enfield.

I prefer the Winchester 150 g hollow points. Take a look at them next time your in the gun shop. Nasty little bullets. I've taken about half a dozen deer with them. They never run to far...

I forgot to mention,

The deer in the above photo was running full out in birch and maple saplings. Approximately a 100 to 150 yard shot from where I was, the deer was running perpendicular to my position and he bowled over on the fifth shot and rolled down the hill. He stopped rolling when his antlers got caught on a sapling...I walked up, put my gun on him and took a couple pictures. He was across a pond so I waited 30 minutes with a re-loaded 30-30 before I walked around the 300 yard long pond to get to him. I could see where he was with my 1.75 to 5 scope but could not tell if he was down or just hiding out...

I think he dropped in the most inacessible section of our property.

I've shoot about two others in similar situations but at shorter distance (30-70 yards).

This Doe was taken at 10 yards, same gun, same pond but on opposite side. It Jumped up, and ran on an angle away from me. Two shots I believe. The second hit he in the back of the skull behind the eye as she jumped over a tree.

If you look closely at this picture, you can see her brains splattered all over the rock. Her Skull cavity was pretty well empty...

To me a "brush gun" for close range deer and moose, should be
1. fast to get up and find the target. A short light gun is better than a long barreled cannon. And a peep sight or a low power scope is good.
2. In a cartridge without TOO much recoil so second and third and fourth shots can be fired more quickly and accurately. Does not have to be a tack driver in a real high velocity round.
3. As second, third, etc. shots may be needed, it should be in a lever, pump or semiauto.

When I was a kid,
my dad use Merkel drilling with two shotgun barrels and one rifles.
It was a good bush gun. We could get wild boar or deer from rifled barrel
and fox from shotgun.
Only problem - weight.
 
I actually am down to 2 guns now (for larger game) I have a 30-06 which was a hand me down from my grandfarther so i'll keep it forever. The other is my Tikka t3 7mm-08, I wanted something sutable for the bush and for longer shots. Not a great round for heavy cover but very light and easy to carry. I have had 30-30s and 44 mags etc but I was scared i would see a monster buck at 200 yds when I cam out of the bush.
 
My new to me Remington model 7, 20 inch barrel in 350 Remington Mag. As soon as my bullets and brass arrive I'll be taking it out for the rest of the season.
