What is the best excercise to improve your shooting with a pistol?

There's an amazing exercise that'll work wonders on your accuracy (this is particularly effective with the larger calibers and the magnums). Unfortunately, I can't think of any way to do this right with anything other than revolvers. I was working with an excellent instructor who taught me this practice technique:

Start with a clean target and do your best to put about 10 rounds right on the bullseye. Then, throw up another clean target, chamber only one cartridge and give the cylinder a spin (if you still feel like you know which chamber has the round in it, look away and keep spinning). When you're satisfied that you have no clue which chamber is loaded, aim at the bullseye and squeeze the trigger when ready. Repeat the process 10 times and then compare the two targets.

This exercise dramatically improves scores for 9 out of 10 shooters. It works because, especially with the larger calibers, it is natural to flinch when you know the gun is about to go off. You have to train yourself to concentrate on the aiming and forget about the explosion you're about to unleash.

Exactly. The most important exercises are mental, not physical. It doesn't take much physical strength to hold a gun reasonably steady while applying a few pounds of pressure against a trigger. Even in rapid fire, the gun will return to the target very quickly without any effort to physically control the recoil. If you just let it happen and trust yourself. The biggest problem for most shooters - myself included - is our subconscious mind anticipating the shot, combined with a little self-doubt.

Exercise a positive self-image and good technique. You don't need to be strong to shoot well or to shoot fast, IMO.

There is an excersize is used for golf that devlopes your "fast twitch muscles" in you forearm and shoulders. For anyone who has shacky arms this will help.

And it also develops all the muscles you don't use everyday.

Here it is. and after 2 weeks you will notice a more steady arm.

The forearms are responsible for the majority of club head speed that you have any control over. You need to have a high percentage of TYPE IIx fast twitch muscle in your forearms and shoulders to take optimum advantage of them.

To develop TYPE IIx fast twitch muscles, you need to do high speed strength exercises. Obtain an old metal shafted club and put some weight near the head (around 10 ounces).

DO NOT PERFORM THIS EXERCISE WITHOUT A LARGE CUSHION ON THE SIDE OF THE GROUND WHERE THE HEAD WILL BE HITTING. YOU CAN INJURE YOUR ELBOWS.
• Perform the exercise shown below for 14 days.
• Perform 3repetitions
• Rest 30 seconds
• Perform 3 repetitions
• Perform 15 total repetitions
• Rotate the forearms as fast as you can each time.
• After 14 days, lay off for a week. You get a rebound effect when you start back.

will ad pics soon..

make sure that you have a pad on either side of you for the stick or club to fall on. A can of beans fixed on the club or stick works fine. I know this is put out for golf but it will help your muscels and your steadyness it did for me. Make sure you do this excersize on your knees.

Good Luck..

any questions PM me...

yeah I bought a bunch of snap caps tonight... time for a few hundred dry fires a day ...see how that helps

The same exercise that straightshooter describes above, can be performed with an auto as well. You'll need some snap caps, and someone to randomly load your mags for you.Snap cap, snap cap, boom, etc.It will help you discover what you are doing right, and wrong.

another thing. buy a stress ball. the latex kind filled with sand or fine beads. then kill it with your bare hands. it will strengthen your hands, wrists, and forearms.

The snap cap thing randomly loaded in the mags works well for killing the flinch and performing IA's. I also like to practice testing my position by bringing the pistol to the firing position with my eyes closed and then opening them once my postion feels right to see how my stance lines up with the sights and target. This is a good way to build an instinctual shooting stance and helps you "feel" when you are in the right position. I find if good habits become instinctual it is much easier to shoot well.

As far as the accuracy /speed thing goes, concentrate on accuracy, and the basics.Once accuracy is a level that you are willing to accept, now work on speed.Don't just try to be fast though, be smooth, and remember the basics.Speed will come on it's own, and chances are , if you concentrate on being smooth, you'll become faster without even noticing it.

you know ive noticed there seems to be a fair bit of ####tards on this post who spend thier days jerking off...any of you ever think about actually getting laid for a change..? For everybody else that had something helpful to post thanks for the advice

hahaha, ouch! Can't handle a bit of humor??

In all seriousness now, I would suggest grip strength exercises would help a great deal. Triceps/bicep exercises and work out your shoulders will also help keep you steady. There is nothing like practicing at the range though. Your snapcaps will help you with your trigger squeeze and release. Practice, practice, practice. There ain't no quick fix.

lol yeah some humour..but when half the thread is about nothing more than jerkin off..I dunno..

Yeah I am trying to shoot a minimum of about 300 rounds a week or so.

Im like that anyways... Im not worried bout the weights I have been lifting for years..just wondering if anybody knew a particular lift that made any decent difference?
