I have a few of the loder style Koplin gun boots, but before I go out and spend the $60 fargin dollars ( I think the case was only $50) they want for the ATV mounting brackett . I though i would ask here to see if there are anyother options.

So whats your favorite mounting system??

Is there one retailer who is considerably cheaper than another. ( My Yamaha dealer want $149.99 for just the brackett, and they wonder why no one shops there)

I put my rifle (usually a carbine) on a sling and hang in front instead of the back

SC...........................

I like Kolpin myself. The bracket is as much $ as the boot but equally important. Seems to be holding up fine. A friend of mine bought some cheesy model from wally world which isnt even close to the quality of kolpin. He will find out when the bracket breaks and his gun goes flying off into the styx. That bracket has alot of leverage on it from an 8 lb gun .

I would say don't mount your rifle on your ATV at all, if it is scoped. It will shake the crap out of your optics. I suppose it depends to some extent on the roughness of the terrain in which you travel, but the last thing I would want would be my scope being out of zero at the critical moment.

Only drawback to the Kolpin is getting the darn thing open! The nylon interior can cause premature wear on your rifle's bolt knob and barrel because of the tightness with which it holds the firearm. It happened to me last year. Some guys I know put grab handles on the top of their Kolpins to make it easier to get it off. After nipping my fingers trying to lever mine open I'm tempted to do the same. Just have to make sure you use lots of Marine Goop or similar to maintain the cases water tight integrity.

what do the rest of you think about this? is it true?

i also have a koplin ... i got a package deal for 50$ atv mount included as a free gift!!!

I'd say just strap it down, inder a pack or something for a bit of stability, in a padded zieeperd case. Just leave the ass end exposed so you can zip it and slide it out of the case. It's not like you can hunt cowboy style from atop an ATV anyway.... right.

I have been using a Kolpin for years. It has never knocked my scope out of kilter yet.I dont bother to put the cover on unless it is raining which it rarely does here during the hunting season. The only thing that you have to watch out for is your sling hanging out.If you are in the bush to pick up game the sling can catch on a limb and your rifle will be hanging on a bush behind you.I saw it happen once.
As for carrying it on my back or on front with the sling it just doesnt work for me.

I've got a few gun boots for my ATV, one on each side. The Plano ones work great and come with a mounting bracket for the price of a Koplin boot alone. I find the Kolpin boots hug your firearm better but are harder to remove the cover. The new Kolpins with the removable gun case I don't have any experience with. I've got another brand I can't remember right now but it's the only boot I have that will accept some of my firearms. You know how tight an M305 is in a Kolpin?

Yup. Just buy a rubber handle from an industrial warehouse. The handle i mounted was a grab handle used on the inside of a vehicle. Just like the grab handles on door pillars in toyota trucks and other cars. A couple of pop rivets hold it on tight. Here is the company i bought mine from. The black handle in the picture is the one i used. Fits perfectly. Click products, click handles.

I usually just strap my hard case to the rear rack and go. The reason I asked is that the hard case on the rack sees to really get shaken about as the terrain I ride is really really rough.

I have concerns about the scope taking the brunt of the abuse because the case is fairly tight around it. Also I find the hard cases I have are prone to letting dust in during the ride in, Especially my double gun case.

I will check out the plano case.

Thanks

I have run the old style Koplin for years, always made my own bracket to fit my needs :) that's why I like the older ones with all the mounting holes on the bottom.

I run up to 500 miles on a ATV every moose season with large lug tires, & never had a scope problem yet! I have, however seen one set-up that the base mount screws can loose whether it was directly related to the ATV mounting or not I cannot say.

Be very carefull your objective lens is not making contact with the boot and taking the wieght of the rifle...

Unless you have an extremely long barrel, this is normal and the result is that the scope is often knocked off zero and in some cases even damaged if the ATV is driven over rough terrain.

Use peep sights, just remember to take the damned fuzz off your sights.

I've only experienced the Kolpin, I didn't have any issues (except for the above) .

I do remember that some of the guys were cursing about how hard theirs were to open.

I use the Kolpin gunboot IV with the bracket (plastic)that cost near as much as the scabbard.I'm not sure but,I think the price of both of them have dropped quite a bit since I purchased mine.Look around there are metal and plastic types that work with the Kolpin scabbards.

For the record I like mine,it doesnt have that fuzzy #### like some of the older ones.Like Redd says,if your barrel is short your rifle is likely only supported by the optics.(I just stuff afew j-cloths down to the end to make sure the barrel touches before the objectibe lens)

I've used a Koplin boot and the metal bracket that attaches to the rack for years and never had a problem. Last year I also added a heavy duty pair of V holders for the front rack that have a rubber snubber strap. My stainless .338 rode up front exposed to all kinds of conditions without a hitch. I keep the muzzle taped to keep out the mud, water & snow and use Bikini covers to keep the Leupold lenses clear until the moment of truth  I now keep the 10/22 in the Koplin for chickens along the way...KF
