What is the best poor mans action

What make of barrel?

IBI, I wanted a handy bolt action that would be pretty accurate to up to 700m for target shooting, effective to 300m for hunting, and still useful for carrying for bush defense and general use. Strange combination I know. Its gonna be a 12.5" 308 1/10 stainless med profle barrel.

Try a tikka and it will be fantastic.
But...I wouldn't build on anything else than a rem 700. The accessibility of parts alone is reason enough.

How about the fact it is the strongest and safest 2 lug bolt action ever made...

I don't think anything beats Tikka on a cost vs performance/features analysis.

Go cheaper and you don't get the same features and/or quality. More expensive and the law of diminishing returns kicks in.

Tikka T3 (from the factory)

Narrow ejection port and closed receiver top with dovetail and scope rail mounting an option (Sako rings and some TRG mounts work out of the box)
75 deg bolt throw (makes a 2 lug throw feel faster..at least in my hands)
Sako extractor
Side mounted bolt release
Simple bolt disassembly
Decent triggers

The amount of aftermarket parts and accessories available for Tikka T3s is way better than when I first got interested in long range shooting.....and we're only talkin a few years ago.

I put a lot of pressure on Savage to bring back the single shot action, and to not mill the top off the receiver, to make it even stiffer.

The OP could do a lot worse than a single shot Savage. Lots of bedding area on the bottom (no magazine opening) and a stiff action.

My wife used a single shot Mauser. Stiff, with lots of bedding area.

I never liked savages until I built a couple of guns off of the single shot series j actions. Now I'm sold.
