What is the biggest caliber im aloud to have in Canada?

There is no such thing as a true "sniper rifle" available to the common public. A sniper rifle is defined as any rifle fitted with a telescopic sight USED BY A SNIPER. If you are not a sniper, then the rifle is not a sniper rifle. Quit your daydreamin boy and eat your pizza.

This guy has been a member for two years and finally makes his first post about the largest caliber that can be owned?

Seriously.

What is the official definition of a 'sniper rifle'?

From Wikipedia:

In military and law enforcement terminology, a sniper rifle is a rifle used to ensure accurate placement of bullets at longer ranges than small arms. A typical sniper rifle is built for optimal levels of accuracy, fitted with a telescopic sight and chambered for a military centerfire cartridge. The term is often used in the media to describe any type of accurized firearm fitted with a telescopic sight that is employed against human targets.

The military role of sniper (a term derived from the snipe, a bird which was difficult to hunt and shoot) dates back to the turn of the 18th century, but the sniper rifle itself is a much more recent development. Advances in technology, specifically that of telescopic sights and more accurate manufacturing, allowed armies to equip specially-trained soldiers with rifles that would enable them to deliver precise shots over greater distances than regular infantry weapons. The rifle itself could be a standard rifle (at first, a bolt-action rifle); however, when fitted with a telescopic sight, it would become a sniper rifle.

Nope I've got a 178mm job that's perfectly legal.
Made it myself out of some P-110 casing cutoffs that were laying about.

The price of black powder and softballs keeps me from shooting much other than on real special occasions.:dancingbanana:

Do you have a video clip of that?

I'm thinking a softball cannon would be fun.

:D
Saw a home built, knockoff .75 caliber "Brown Bess" fired on a club range a few years back.

Put a big gaping hole in the target 50 yards away and killed every mosquito within a 100 yard circle with the smoke.

the german army had a monster gun that threw a 3500 lb. shell about 27 miles if memory serves me correctly.took 500 men to run it .not a sniper gun but it must rate up there for large .

What is the official definition of a 'sniper rifle'?

anything a "sniper" would use, which brings the next question....
what is the definition of "sniper"??
A single shot .22 with a scope, used to hunt squirels could be considered
a "sniping platform". i guess it depends on what it's purpose
is intended for.
ie: baseball bat's have other uses besides hitting baseballs.

caliber

Canadian Military states that small arms are 25mm or less, but that being said the bushmaster m242 is 25mm and I sure as f**k wouldn't fire it from the shoulder yet a CarlG is 84mm and it is fired from the shoulder. So I have no idea what separates a firearm from a gun

the CF does quote that under 25mm is a "small" arm. The difference between a 25mm bushmaster and a carl G are pretty easy to understand.
- the 25mm is just a .50BMG on steroids (not really, but whatever)
- the 84mm carl G is a ROCKET POWERED EXPLOSIVE WARHEAD

sure hope that helps out a bit
