I remember when the Colt Python came out, or at least when I saw my first one . It was all shock and awe...and it still turns heads over other revolvers..regardless of barrel lenght.to this day..IMHO..
And for semis, the Mauser Broomhandle, or luger or 1911..works of art..

I never shot any of those, but I own an HK USP and it rocks. I think HK is la crème de la crème. As for the 1911, well for example I read that lots of troops that had the M9 ditch them for the old 1911. Seems it's like the AK-47 of the handgun world...

I think it was in the movie excalibur, that the final knight who passed the test and lived in looking for the grail, was asked to pick out the grail amonst the treasure pile, he picked out the right one, because it was the simplest one, the cup of a carpenter, then the next question was who does it serve, and the reply was something like "you, lord"
so the grail would be, i think, for each of us, the one gun that serves that individual's particular taste, needs, skills, or function best.
the old saying about beware the man with one gun (he probably knows how to use it!!)
great responses out there from 1911, python and glocks etc.
i do own an unfired pasadena automag, a couple of unfired lee jurras custom 100 matching automags, plus a north hollywood shooter, got them in 2007 and imported very smoothly thru mark at questar, for me, those are my personal holy grails as i waited 30 years to acquire one, and then went with 4
but these are really my children's future university tuition education funds. lol

Interesting question in two parts, the personal vs. "public" opinions...
Personally, I feel that the BHP is a far better handgun than the 1911, and in it's originally intended military role, I would think that there are probably nearly as many (or maybe far more?) issued to units of the world's armies.
Of course, keeping in mind that I am vehemently agnostic, I suppose that one could also adopt the desire to have the handgun that would "smite the foe like the hand of (a) god"....
In that case, I would have to say that a nice .357mag revolver would pretty much epitomize the hand cannon of justice, no?
