What is the most accurate HG?

What is the most accurate HG?

The following are hard to beat choices in the proper hands:

Revolvers

1) S&W 4" barrel model 18
2) S&W 6" barrel model 17
3) Colt Diamondback 4"
4) Colt Diamondback 6"

Semi-Autos

1) Colt Match Target Woodsman
2) Smith & Wesson Model 41
3) Browning Medalist
4) Ruger MK-II KMK-512

I used to have a long barrelled (8") Dan Wesson .44 magnum. Nothing I've owned before or since has even come close to the accuracy I got from that gun.
Got one and yeah I fully agree, Dan B does too...

The handgun I really use more lately due to winter, and hence turning to indoor range practice, is a Colt Model 357. Boy it's good accuracywise.

I do like my S&W Model 629 though. I just know it cannot take the abuse that the Dan Wesson can easily take in stride.

...there's some really bizarre selections here, I can't wrap my head around why guys keep suggesting autos for the most accurate 100 to 250 yard handguns. Strange.

Some Freedom Arms revolvers approach 1" groups at 100 yards, that doesn't just edge out any auto, be it a P210 X5 or you name it, that absolutely obliterates it. :)

It's easy to suggest different guns based on what people read but how many have actually tried it? Anyone have some real long range experience?

I've shot handguns regularly to 200 meters, and quite often past that just for fun. If you ever were a silhouette competitor, this was a common thing. I've used a 1911 out to 100, and can hit with it, but you sort of have to walk the bullets on the target, and use a lot of "Kentucky windage". Even then, you're not going to make every shot. Yes, some autoloaders are very accurate, but I've never seen one that would outshoot a comparable revolver at those distances (including Automags and Wildeys). FWIW - dan

Thanks for the many great ideas. Been helpful.

I have been shooting these distances with my Ruger 22lr HG and have had no issue hitting milk jug sized targets at 200 to 250yds. Biggest problem has been seeing the target with open sights. Can't hit smaller cause I can't aim smaller. I hope to put some optics on soon.

My goal would be 4 to 6" targets at 200ish yds from a rest.

I saw an article years ago on a MOA revolver project (successful at 100yds) and this has stayed with me since. The cost though would be prohibitive so I wondered that if modern HG's would get me to at least 2MOA at these distances?

I don't see why not Jerry. Again, you would have to pick a pretty accurate handgun, and, as always, practice, practice, practice. Are there any silhouette clubs near you? Maybe go and watch the guys shooting that, and see what they use and how they do. I can't do it, but I watched a guy empty a Superblackhawk at a ram target at 500 meters one time and hit it with every shot. Of course, he was pretty exceptional with a handgun. Frozen milk jugs at 100 make pretty good targets that are easy to spot at those distances too. Steel targets are helpful because of the noise. I scoped my Dan Wesson 44 for a while, just to see how bad a shot I really was, and was surprised at what you could hit once you can see it. I have two 357 Max revolvers that work pretty good at these distances too, one a Ruger and one a DW. - dan

Not long ago. when handgun sillywet shooting was popular in the US, Dan Wesson revolvers dominated the "production revolver" category....in the "open production" cat. it was the TC contender. This sport is probably the best test of long range handgunning. Having said that, it has been said by shooters much better than i that" .22Lr rimfire ammo(match) is the most accurate factory ammo made", so I'll go with an accurate(walther or some such) .22lr. inside 100yds.

Man, this is an excellent thread!!
Seeing that I own some really outstanding wheelguns, and a Ruger Mk2 bull barrel, that I will plan someday to push to the outer limits of capability, I get a kick out of these last 6-7 posts.....
Hey, have anyone of you guys read, "Sixguns by Keith?"
It is a most enjoyable read, for any student of the handgun.
