What is the Quintessential .308 hunting rifle

I think that there is a correct answer... or at least a "more" correct answer... With a 750, you already have a short, light, fast carbine... in my opinion, you don't don't need another, such as a 760 or BLR or 99 or 88... I think to complete your battery, a nice accurate bolt action would be the best complement to your existing gun... there are many good options... a Win 70, or Kimber 8400 or Sako 85... or another way to go, depending on how you feel about single shot rifles, would be a Ruger #1... an RSI would be very nice... it would be very effective in WMU 47 where shots are usually not overly long and you rarely get more than one good one.

OK I'll bite, 10 savage axis's ...one in each colour, caliber, and configuration they make....although you may feel out of place carrying the MuddyGirl model....or maybe not!

One of those older Tikka/Ithaca models would be a swell catch.
LS series I believe?

an Ithaca LSA55 or Tikka M55 (same same pretty much)

A Sako Handy/L579 18.5 Barrel 40" OAL and 6.5 lbs with irons or the same vintage Classic/L579 42.5 OAL 7lbs .. no sights .. both very nice... Handy could be had with detachable magazine (special order)

Those CZs with the full length stock look mighty nice to me and I hope to have one in 9.3x62 some day.

Check out the Coopers if a guilty pleasure is what you are after. I have 2: .223 Varminter and 280AI in Jackson Game. Both are fantastic.

After some talk on here folks have me thinking about a Kimber in .308 since I like my FN Win 70 in 30-06 so much minus the trigger which a Kimber ought to fix. For the price the FN Win 70 is hard to beat. But with a 3k limit you have options and why not a Cooper?

One of these would be my choice for you...................

or one of these....................

or one of these.........

these are pretty nice at 5 lbs 15 oz all up ready to hunt.

Not nice!!
Posting such pictures on today, of all days! :bangHead:

I shoot the Remington 7600 pump action, with 22" barrel (in .270), and I'd normally recommend that, but it wouldn't make sense when you already have the model 750. I'd say a Remington model 700, in one of the many models that are offered. (And even though I'm a .270 fan, I'll openly say that you can never go wrong with a .308.....all the best:)

I'm seeing a whole lot of pretty rifles....but not one that I'd hunt 47 with. Thick Boreal, fast shots (esp. as most of us run dogs). I hunt 46 and 47 every year and have for two decades....and this'll for sure make some types cringe because of how it *looks*....but the best .308 I've *ever* used in 46/47 is my RFB. Red dot for the tight shots, a VXIII 2.5-8 for shooting across the hay marsh or beaver pond. Ugly as f*#k but the PERFECT gun for close shots, long(ish) shots, and it's sooooo short it doesn't hang up, even in the worst tag alders and rabbit marsh.

Instead of a CZ, I'm guessing that c-fbmi's stainless fullstock rifle is a Ruger RSI International (Lipsey's Special Edition?)

Yep Ruger RSI in 250-3000..........don't know if it's a Lipseys or not, doesn't say anything on it. I prefer the blued ones and would trade that for a blued 250 in mint condition, in a heartbeat.

My vote goes to Browning x-bolt. drop mag, nice carry, 1" @ 200y. Love it.

For a nicer gun in .308 i love thwe X-bolts, lighter than my savage, way more accurate than i am, and even though they are lighter i find the recoil feels much better compared to a savage 16 side by side.

OK I'll bite, 10 savage axis's ...one in each colour, caliber, and configuration they make....although you may feel out of place carrying the MuddyGirl model....or maybe not!

This can also be quite an option if you're the type of person who drops or forgets things a lot. You you get a dozen savages and a dozen mora knives and always have a half decent hunting setup ready to go. You could keep one in your truck, one at home, at the camp, at your buddy's place....
