What is the Quintessential .308 hunting rifle

...and this'll for sure make some types cringe because of how it *looks*....but the best .308 I've *ever* used in 46/47 is my RFB.

Yep... I cringed... poor deer are gonna be the laughing stock in the happy hunting grounds for forgetting his flak jacket...

two things....first, function does trump form....at least for anyone who is serious. My FJ is fugly too...but it's better off road than the vette.

Second: Flak jacket? You're insinuating that this gun is/is based on some form of military gun. It's not...nor has it been fielded by any military....it's a sporting rifle. Now your ruger/Mauser/enfield is a different story ;)

Actually, you threw out the "cringe" concept, I merely agreed... and with regard to the "flak jacket" I was thinking more along the lines of one of the urban Tactical video games all the young folk seem to like...

Now you've gone and done it, you went and stirred up the UFA(United Fudds Association) ;)

Sporting rifle?
Looks like a yung whipper snapper look at me sort of critter.
Sporting rifles sport wood and blue and stainless and patina and did I mention wood?
Yu'all know what patina is?

Yep I'm with you 'Looky, us fudds gotta stick together.......I also use leather saddles not rip stop nylon or cordura what ever.........and the fact that we have a rifle like that which is NOT an offshoot of a military firearm, I find just plain wrong !! Even deer deserve to get killed with prettier guns than that.

wood has nothing to do with sporting but is sure looks nice on the euro guns when you get the high grade stuff but just the wood costs more than the 3k cap the OP put on this thread.

I have thought about an RFB for this purpose, would really like to shoot and handle one. They look so cheaply made in pictures!
What is the trigger like?
trigger is the best of any bullpup I have ever handled, shoots very good for a semi too from my experience.

Setting up the RFB for hunting, these were the last rounds of the day after the scope and gas system was dialed in:

100yds shooting 180gr factory loaded nosler partitions
(excuse the crappy cell phone pic)

I handled a ruger gunsite scout today. Very impressed by the quality. It had just about the nicest irons i've seen on a rifle. I would definately recommend having a look at one!

Remington 760 Carbine in .308......short rifle, short action
I had one but sold it to fund something else that caught my eye....is there such a thing as 'sellers regret'
Like this? :p

I shoot the Remington 7600 pump action, with 22" barrel (in .270), and I'd normally recommend that, but it wouldn't make sense when you already have the model 750.
One could always sell the 750 and get it right the second time around with a 760/7600.

My Steyr Scout rifles are utilitary tools but if you are talking beauty and extra accurate hunting rifle, this could be up there, those Steyr Mannlicher are something else with the most awsome single set trigger ever ( 300 WM SM Luxus )... JP.

As you can see from everyone's posts, the quintessential 308 hunting rifle is whatever floats yer boat! Depending on my mood, I'll reach for either my m700, kimber Montana 84m, keltec RFB or my M1A. Or my bow... They all work.
