What is the ULTIMATE Varmint Round??

Here are the choices:
17HMR, 204 Ruger, 223REM, 22-250REM, 220SWIFT, 243WIN, 6mm Creedmoor, 6.5mm Creedmoor, and the 308WIN.

these are the deciding factors
Cost per round (bought or hand load), MOA (at 100, 200, 300 yards), availability of accessories, projectiles, barrel twists (factory or after market), Improved or not improved

Somehow 22LR snuck into some of these responses, but I took "ultimate varmint round" to mean a versatile caliber to cover-off lots of varmint applications. 22LR is pretty limited, in spite of the fact that it's the caliber I shoot most. :) Gophers, barn pigeons, squirrels, maybe raccoons that are close=about as far as I'd push 22LR. Gophers positively love 22LR. :)

add what you want...no definate rules...some 22LR have a good punch at close range like cci stingers (25 -75 yards turns them into jelly), similar to a Ruger 44 C&B..i am sure there are a few cals i missed. just the ones i could think of on the fly

As noted previously......22-250AI. I bought mine because of the build, then realized what I really acquired. 1:9 twist...60 BT at about 3500 FPS. Incredibly flat trajectory......you did ask for “ultimate” suggestions, plus you can fire form brass with factory loads.

Any super accurate 6mm cartridge such as 6x47 Lapua, 6mm CM or 6mm PPC.
These cartridges can launch a .400 BC 85-90gr varmint bullet at 3200 fps with outstanding accuracy (better than .5 MOA).
This allows them to squarely hit a long range target where other would miss.
(Another way to see this is that all 600 yards and under precision matches and long range varminting competitions are won using 6mm cartridges).

I vote for the Ackley .22 Eargesplitten Loudenboomer

yes and my understanding of AI is being able to fire AI plus store loads
but the reverse is not possible

You do know that the word "professional" refers to someone that gets paid for their services, right?

I didn't realize that we had paid varmint vaporizers here on CGN.

actually the dictionary def is : paid for a.service yes ....however since i have been away from ballistics for some time (close to novice) and many here have way more knowledge then myself i consider them professional (dictionary meaning or not) and with proven ballistics with what they know

If ye be whackin' pest critters in an area that provides a sure backstop such as shooting down into gullies or into hill bases, then any rifle will do. It's great fun & practice using one's big game rifles & slug guns fer varmint removal. The last coyote I beaned was with an un-bubba'd milsurp Brazilian Mauser in 7x57 at 30 yds as it was sunning itself in front of it's den.

Tracked the den down following the direction of howling from the night before.;)
