I'm looking for somthing to wear on my belt in grouse country. Shots could be at 40-50 yards, or right up close. I don't want plastic crap, but a good, well made quality piece. I'm familier with the Webley's, is there anyting else?
What is the very best and most potent pellet pistol I can get?

The Crosman 2240 would be about the only pistol that would come close.
Remember,anything over 500fps in a pistol is restricted.You would be charged just the same as if you were hunting with a .44 mag pb pistol.
That being said,if you install a 10" .22 cal barrel onto a 2240,you'll have a nice little pistol that would take out grouse out to 10 yrds no problem with a head shot.Just keep the pistol under your jacket next to your body to keep it warm until you are ready to use it,co2 sucks in cold weather.

I just bought a 2240 and added a few goodies. There is no end to things you can do to one of these guns. I had a Webley pistol a few years ago in .177 and a buddy had the same in .22

that is deadly on small critters including grouse.
Never notice problems with the cold with pump mechanism.
But generally use it for grouse during deer season,
so cold not a real issue.

Why do you want co2 any ways? It doesn't work in cold weather.
They don't make a 1322, but it's easy to buy a .22 barrel, bolt and breech to replace the parts on a 1377. Neither is better, they are completely different guns. The 2240 is co2 single shot and 2289 is a multipump pneumatic. Different pros/cons, but both suck pretty hard out of the box, important parts that are loose and made of plastic. They are all upgradeable, huge amounts of aftermarket parts exist for all 22xx series, a lot of custom stuff too. The most noteable and important is the steel breech kit which replaces that wiggly plastic breech with one that has a scope rail. There are parts to bulk fill the 2240 from a co2 tank, barrels to increase barrel length all the way to 24", hammer spring adjusters, custom stocks, pretty much every part except the main tube and handle frame can be replaced with fancier things.

Only problem is that by the time people are done building them, they could've bought a much nicer gun for all the money they spent any ways.

Your talking about a pistol for hunting,so .177 is out of the question.Remembering that you are only aloud 500fps max for a legal pistol,.22 is your only choice.I have done up a few 2289's,in reality they only do 390fps-440fps out of the box with 10 pumps.With a flat top valve and piston mod,you can it the 500fps mark with 10 pumps.With this in mind,you will have one shot then have to pump 10 X's again to get your second shot if needed.Another thing is,the 2289 is around 17" long in pistol form.With the 2240 with just a barrel change,you can have the 500fps with 25 good full power shots at your ready.Like i said before,you keep the pistol under your coat to keep it warm until you need it.When it comes to the springer pistols,good luck on getting one that really shoots 500fps with.22.

50 yards with a pistol...I say nay ,nay. You will need to be the best shot on the planet, outdoors ,no rest or bum bag. For that you will need a PAL rated rifle in at least .22 . You need to look at chairgun to see the energy you will need. A diabolo shaped projectile at 50 yds, need weight and speed to get the FPE for hunting.
Hey Triggerhappy, are you serious? This guy is talking about shooting Grouse in the head at close ranges... 50 yds isn't going to happen. You sure as heck don't need a .22 for that. I have killed many, many grouse with a .177. The old adage of .177 for target and .22 for hunting is crap. If you are taking body shots you are wasting your time with either... there is a lot of breast there and not a lot of vital.
If you want a good single shot pneumatic pistol that is under 500fps then consider the gamo compact.... I know, that gamo isn't known for its quality but check this pistol out. It is made in spain and is good quality... feels very solid for mostly plastic...
The other pistol I would consider would be a daisy 747. Again a single stroke pneumatic that is very capable of taking grouse humanely.
The 2240 won't be the gun of choice as the CO2 could be unpredictable in the cold weather... stick with spring or pump guns...
