Check out these sites for some excellent real world facts about airgun hunting.

Hey triggerhappy, I checked those sites and none of them had anything about air pistols under 500fps. Heck they had very little about pistols at all. The 1st site had mainly bigbore stuff. I don't think we are talking about hunting deer or hogs here.
I did however find Dr. Beemans chart on FPE needed for airgun hunting. http://www.airgundepot.com/airguns-small-game-hunting.html
If you check this he recomends 2FPE for sparrows and such 3FPE for squirels and such and 5FPE for rabbits. I guess Dr. Beeman probably doesn't know as much as you do about airguns
As for shooting an .177 for hunting I will take the penetration that I get over the supposed "shock" you could get from a .22. Now this isn't a low power airgun, but my 860FPS BSA with Crosman Premiers (7.9gr) will completely shoot thru 7 inches of water in a washer fluid jug. Yes completely through! Try that with a .22.
Opinions are everywhere... I am glad you put yours on here.
Have fun hunting and keep your shots close.
