what is this whole key mod thing about?

well, I think its more of a lighter and less weight thing. Keymod type handguards eliminate the weight of a full quad rail, allowing you to use little rail sections and place them where you need them. Also, this gets you a slimmer profile handguard for a more positive support hand grip around it..

Keymod adapters are also much lighter than picatinny adapters so the weight savings are compounded.
For example a GG&G picatinny to Harris bipod stud adapter weighs in at 37 grams while a Noveske keymod to Harris bipod adapter weighs 7 grams.
The cost savings also add up since the GG&G adapter costs $30.00 while the Noveske adapter costs $18.00.

They're a system designed to demonstrate the degree to which H&K is out of touch with the market.
Is that because HK just released their Keymod system which is the inverse of everyone else with proprietary spacing to boot?
I own several of their firearms which I love dearly but some of the decisions they make are monumentally stupid.
Yeah...at first that's what my question was....since there are a variety of handguards out there without quad rails and some of them even include the rail sections in the box. Seems to be versatile enough....I'd imagine the weight difference between a keymod and samson evo rail is negligible?
I just sold a Samson 15" Evolution on the EE. The Evo rail sections are stupid heavy IMHO.
1 believe the 4" rail section weighs in at over 45 grams.
Add to that my GG&G picatinny to Harris bipod stud adapter and you are at 85 grams which is 78 grams more than the Noveske adapter bolted directly to a keymod rail.
My 16.7" Noveske keymod rail will come in lighter than the 15" Sampson.
12.7 oz for the 16.7" Noveske vs 13.4 oz for the 15" Samson.
I know it's less than 1 oz but add the 2 oz difference in mounting hardware for a bipod adapter and another 1 oz for a sling adapter etc and it adds up when you already have a 40 oz barrel on there.
I could save another 1 oz by going with a 15" Noveske rail but I love the full length rail look too much for that.

That and all that weight is coming off the barrel end of the rifle. Which I would hazard to say it equivalent to 8+oz off the stock end.
I'm guessing this, while thinking of the "1 pound off the wheels = 8 pounds off the body" used with cars.
