What is your favourite hunting bullet in 308 win?

I would agree with this. Premiums are not as critical for 308 velocities.
 
165 grain in the 308. Hornady SP [not the sst's], Remington PSPCL's, Speer Hot Cores & if you need something with better penetration Nosler's Partition, Swift's A-Frame or Speer's Grand Slam although, as has been mentioned, for a 308 you're just gilding the lily by using premium bullets, as they were designed for higher initial velocities. Plus, given the lower initial velocity, expansion at longer ranges won't be what you hoped for.
I've always felt that there is no reason to use 150 grain bullets in the 308 since their ~100 fps initially higher velocity is offset by the greater energy at all ranges for the 165 grain bullets & the wind drift difference is negligible.
 
165 Sierra Gameking or Tipped Gameking, 165 Partition or 165 Accubond. Any hunting bullet that shoots accurately out of your gun will be great at 308 velocity. Right now I am really liking the 165 gr tipped game king at 2814 fps.
 
I took a 6 point bull elk this year at 330m with 178g ELD X I recovered 30% of the bullet under the opplosite hide (that was stretched like a balloon). Hit a rib on entry. DRT upper lungs.

The 150s would offer less recoil to new shooters with reduced loads. That's the only reason I'd use them. :)

Doing that very thing right now with my grandson.
 
Another vote for the Barnes TTSX 130gr...

5 round group from a cold barrel at 100 yards from a 16" barrelled Sig Cross (top one is me):

And here's the ballistics for it from my particular rifle. By all accounts, that's an acceptable 500 yard load.

They aren't exactly cheap. :oops: They are double the price I paid for Hornady Interlock 150gr.

I have a great load for the 125gr Nosler Ballistic Tip that runs a wee bit over 3000 fps out of my Savage Precision Carbine.

The problem is I am afraid to use that bullet on deer as it was designed as a match / varmint bullet. I read about some people having near side explosions. I don't quite understand that as the bullet should at least carry its momentum into a thin skinned animal like a White Tail and absolutely destroy the chest cavity.

Not really worried about paying a lil more than a buck a projectile here.

The Barnes are workin for me. Yeah others have worked too. Hard to pick a bad one. But I like what they do enough to stick with em.
 
I have two go to rounds at the moment. Probably a different than anyone else is running. But man do they work.

190 grain Nosler Accubond Long Range at 2550fps, and the Barnes 120 Tac-Tx at 3250fps.

I have used the 150 gr Nosler Partition in my hunting for the last 40 years for elk , moose and deer hunting with a BLR 308 WIN. The bullet has never failed me. It expands beautifully to a mushroom shape and stays together beautifully because of the H interior design with two densities of lead in the bottom and the top, separated by by a thick belt of brass. I have weighed several of these "kill" bullets. They still retain about 75% of the original out of the box weight. You cannot ask for better than that. Period.
