What is your go to Turkey Gun

I used just about every legal shotgun I owned at one point or another, just because, including a 14-inch Fabarm Martial Pro Forces, a cherished Brno ZP49, an old Winchester 37, and a bunch of assorted pumps and semi-autos. Probably my favourite "serious" turkey gun was an old H&R 10-gauge single, cut down at 20 inches and threaded, with an aftermarket X-full choke (Colonial?) and a short piece of Weaver rail screwed to the barrel in the scout position, usually wearing a red-dot sight. It looked like crap, but worked like a charm.

I sold most of my turkey gear when I left Ontario. I might have a chance to go for a few days this coming spring. I'll use either a short turkey-choked barrel I just got off the EE and mounted on an 870...or...I'm toying with the idea of using a short-barreled Turkish Ricol O/U threaded and equipped with turkey chokes. It has a nice set of simple, non-adjustable fibre-optic front/rear sights on the rib right from the factory, and they happen to be perfectly aligned for a 30-yard zero with most loads I've tried. It's just a super-cool fun gun, and right now it has never been blooded...and I can't stand that! :)

Winchester Model 12 with a 30 inch full choke barrel with the old milled rib. With a heavy field load of #6s. Smacks them good.

I put a vortex viper 4-16x44 on a savage .17 hmr laminate stainless heavy barrel. Rimfires are legal here for turkey. I can hit shotgun shells off the rack at 200. However there are barely any turkeys where I live unless I travel east a couple hours so I haven’t got one yet ;)

Scoped Mossberg 500 shooting #5 3 inch winchester XX through tightwad choke.

Originally used a red dot but my astigmatism ruined that plan so i switched to the Dead Ringer Beard Buster sights which was great but my eye had been getting worse so moved to scope and it has been amazing.

Whats a comfortable range with that setup? I have an 835 and will be using the same choke and ammo. I know my barrel is overbored to 10g, but im unsure as to how much difference that will make until i get to pattern it.

You're a few years behind on the hunting regulations.

It's nice that we can use 7's now, but as mentioned by others we should be allowed smaller. Shot shell technology is always advancing. There is no reason we shouldnt be allowed to use 9's in TSS.

The funny part is that we can use 5,6,7 magnum blends. Ever cut one open? The inconsistencies in the slag put many of the pellets in the 9-10 range. There are really tiny pellets in some of them.

I guess I better freshen up and re-read the regs!

Furthest ive patterned mine was 40yrds and it was still plenty of pellets. 35yrds is my furthest kill. Ive also polished my barrel with honing compound and scotchbrite pads and rubbing compound to where it is almost chromed.

Yours will surely be different like all guns but i think youll have plenty of dead turkeys with it.

This is from about 17-18 yrds

Made a mess of his face and his head flopped back and hit its wing, no pellets in his chest or wings

Browning BPS NWTF edition with 24 inch barrel and an Aimpoint Micro H1 mounted on it. The Aimpoint is fabulous - if the dot is on the bird’s head it is going down, no matter how awkward or contorted the shooting position.
