What is your typical hunting/shot distance?

0-600 yds. The vast majority falls in under 300 yds though. And most of the elk and moose i have killed have been sub 100yds with the exception of a few.

It has most often been about 50 to 60 yards, occasionally just 10 or 12 and only once was it 290.

Though I sight in for anout 1.5 to 2-inches high at 100 metres planning for a 200 metre zero, I shoot at 25 and 50 when sighting in so that I know where the bullet goes at those distances because that is my most frequent sighting of deer and black bear.

I mostly hunt from a tree stand (deer) or over baits from a ground blind (bears). Those shots are usually pretty short, <150 yards or so.

I do like to climb out of my tree stand mid-day, have a lunch at the truck and refresh my coffee, and usually switch guns and go for a walk. I'll make my way to a hydro corridor, where shots can be hundreds of yards. Longest poke I've taken is ~470 yards.

I would say the average is probably 75-90 yards for bear and 110-125 yards for deer.

Shot deer with buckshot as close as 30 yards and moose about 600yds (300 WM), Elk at 300 yds (300 WSM), whitetail out to about 400yds (270) and rest were all closer with 9.3 x 62, 30-06, 30-30, 243. 223.

This my 52nd yr. of big game hunting. Every animal except two have been taken within 100yds. One buck was 194 yds. One moose was around 400yds and this years moose 180yds. Model 70 in 30-06 has accounted for the vast majority. Bought a pre 64 M-70 in Super 30 (300 H&H) a few years back and kinda took a liking to it. If hunting out of my permanent blind here on my property all shots are 30 to 40 yds. 165 gr. Nosler partitions in the 30-06 and 180gr, Nosler Partitions and Accubonds are the choice for the Super 30. Here in Ont long shots are not common.

I've taken about 150 head of game so far in the last 50 years. I've hunted mostly in Saskatchewan, but some in the BC and Yukon mountains and some in the jungles of far off lands. I haven't calculated lately, but the last time I went through my journals the average distance was calculated at just over 100 yds / meters. My last six animals, all from this year were a bull elephant at 5 meters, a wildebeest at about 120, an impala at about 110, a cow elk at about 120, and a black bear at about 80. Even though I live on the wide open great plains many of my critters were shot at under 50 meters. Farthest shot I've successfully taken at unwounded game is a Dall sheep at about 320M, a whitetail at about the same, and an Eland at about 260. A few more deer, moose and elk at 250 or so. I don't feel right about shooting farther than that, and even at 250 I would shoot only under certain conditions of the correct rifle and load with a very steady rest, calm animal, and open terrain that allows a follow up shot. I try to limit my shots to ones I call "95%" shots or better. I've wounded and lost five big game animals. Just over three percent. I'd like that wounding loss to be zero, but hunting is never a sure thing.

Deer in Alberta range from ft to as far as you can make a clean kill. I’ve talked 2 deer at 500. A mule buck with 280 and a wt with a 2506. Most have been 100-200 yds. Moose with a 300 win at 50-200 yds. Also a moose with 2506 at 150. Good bullets and well placement are always the key

Max so far was just about bang on 300yards black bear with a 300 win mag. Shortest was a deer on Haida Gwaii with a 243, I doubt it was further than 6 yards away from me… On average I would have to say between 100 to 200 yards.

While I enjoy long range shooting and would be comfortable to 400 yards with the right bullet/rifle combo for the animal I started as a bow hunter and really love to get as close as I can.

As soon as I have back surgery and I’m healed, I have allot of hours to put into archery again seeing as I was in the middle of getting back into traditional… might have to get another compound for the time being.

Since I started keeping records in 1973, my average distance has been 116 yards. I like hunting more than I like shooting, so I don't like shots past 250 yards. Over 150 tags filled over those years. Moose, elk, deer, bear, wild boar and a few African critters.
Started out with a .243. Then switched to a .270. As money became more available, I purchased more rifles and used various calibers; 308 win., 358 win, 30-06, .50 and .54 caliber black powder, 375 ruger, 375 H &H, 7-08, 7x65R.
All of them seem to work fine with proper bullet placement. I'm a fan of Barnes X bullets.

Wolf 10 yards
5 moose all under 125 yards
3 dall sheep all under 200 yards
Bear 7 yards
1 deer 289 yards
99 deer 250 yards and in with most being inside 50 yards.

I’m in NW Ontario. Not too many long shots to be found. For deer I’m typically well under 50yds, and often under 100ft. For moose, most of the animals our group has taken were 100yds or less. Small game, maybe 25ft.

Deer hunting, 100 yards, by choice. I hunt from a ground blind. Keeping a bit of a distance is good for noise and smell.
