The range is pretty vast stretching from Alaska to Great Britain. In Ontario, you would probably have to make your way up to James Bay to hunt them, but they are said to winter on the Great Lakes in small numbers.

I was going to say a "dead duck" but Surf Scoter (Melanitta perspicillata) was likely the answer we where looking for.
They are an interesting bird, very noisy when taking flight and have been known to dive to hundreds of feet.
Tight Groups,
Rob

There are a few killed off of the 1000 Islands every year. I know of one killed near Brockville. A few Eiders filter their way down as far as Kingston aswell and the was an immature King eider killed on the Rideau river last year.

Good picture Ted. A while back while taking my Yellow Lab for a walk along the beach here, I ran into a strange looking duck. At least I'd never seen anything like it. It didn't seem to be too scared so I went home and came back with a camera. As it wasn't too frightened I didn't have much difficulty getting close and vooming in a little for a few pictures.

A knowledgeable friend thought it to be a Muscovy Duck, a domestic that had probably strayed from home.
