What lever gun cal would you choose?

What lever gun cal would you choose other than a 30/30 for timber type hunting. Not really thinking about the 30 06, 7mm or .308's kind of things. Your max range would be 100m. You could hunt deer, black bear or moose. Or all three:eek: If you had to choose one lever gun cal. Which would it be and why? I think I can predict the outcome. But think about it honestly. Would it be a .35 rem, 38-55, 444, 45/70, .450 just to list a few. These aren't your choices. Just listing a couple. What do you think?

Dave.

45-70. Super versatile, especially when handloaded. Use 300's or 350 premiums for long range medium and heavy game, or the big heavy hardcast for up close and personal encounters with the critters that have sharp and pointys.

Plus, what could *possibly* be more macho than a big levergun full of hot 45-70 handloads?

Second vote for me would be the 44 mag and/or 45 LC. Big enough to get the job done, you can get a lot in the mag, cheap to reload and light recoiling.

Oh, and the 348, 450 alaskan, 50 Alaskan, 460 S&W and 500 S&W would all be superb chioces, but I didn't select any of them owing to their rarity and expense. Also good choices but not selected due to their limited availability were the 307 and 356

Well for Deer, Black Bear and the odd Moose under a 100 meters I can't think of a better Cartridge for that then the 35 Remington:rockOn:

Myself, I would choose the .45-70 without hesitation. It is extremely versatile depending on how you load it. If I wasn't a handloader I would probably lean more towards the .450 Marlin.

Why not just choose the 30/30 Win.? Just wondering why You said, "other than the 30/30 Win." ?

OK....do you have a 336ER to sell? I gotta ask. If you do I'll pay you too much money for it.

My vote? I LOVE the .44 mag. seriously, I have 5 guns in .44, and have shot everything from grouse to Bears with it......and a tube mag holds a stupid amount of shots ;)

Heres my latest .44! Marlin 1894.

I've got the same marlin in 44 mag, I don't find it any better or worse then my 30/30.
Anyone yet had a chance to shoot the new 308 Marlin?
If it wasn't for the fact that I want a 450 marlin and 45/70 real bad right now I might be tempted.

Traditional style 336 with 308 balistics,,,,,interesting

I too wonder why discount the 30-30 but then accept the .35 Rem ? Hopefully we will one day see a .338 Federal in a Marlin 18xx - I can only wish.
