What non-restricted sub $1000 black rifle do you recommend?

Haven't been keeping up, but a VZ-58 is a damn fine rifle. Nothing else otherwise... CX-4 is nice, but it's a pistol round if you don't mind that.

What about a ruger American ranch, or some other bolt action with a short barrel, not sure if it qualifys as a black rifle but you could toss some decent glass on it for about $1000. Threaded barrel, availables chassis options, could end up pretty black rifley.

I have the keltec su-f and I love it. I know the stories, I've heard the laughter .. but I've also outshot my share of "jocked up" AR types with it. It's plastic so use your head. It folds at the stock to fit in your back pack or go bag so keep it handy. I still use only the iron sights cause I only shoot it out to 60 metres .. I don't miss much. In a shtf situation it could be a go to gun, but all round it's a great shooter. Around $1000 new? My absolute favourite however is my jr carbine in 9 mm. Absolutely my best value most fun shoot all day with crazy accuracy gun. You get an extra (140 fps?) from the long barrel compared to pistols with same or better accuracy in cq conditions and it's a tack driver at 50 - 75 yards? $1200 new?

you need to shoot further out

They'll both shoot great further too. Those are the distances I choose to use these guys for however. I have others I would pick for long long, but not new for $1000.

i would Say a vz 58 like most of the people here. its a bit above the 1000 but its a fun shoot and fairly cheap ammo if you wanna go corrosive army surplus stuff. Has a decent amount of parts for future upgrades if you want to throw on a quad rail for sites and grips etc down the road. I find it reliable accurate with even the iron sites. I though i remember hearing the vz58 are getting hard to find or they stopped making them to make something else temporarily to produce somethings else for a year or something so they've gone up in price. but if u find a good used one or a new one cheap get one for sure

I have the a CSA VZ58 non restricted. I have the skeleton stock on mine which is what I wanted. There are some decent options for accessories but you don't really need anything. The iron sights are very good. There are side mounts, replacement forends, rear sight replacements to mount an optic but the comb is too low to keep a cheek weld with factory stocks for most people so you either need to replace the stock or raise the cheek piece on the one you have. I would highly recommend this rifle. Mine shoots the milsurp I have(Not sure of it's origin or how to find out. It had Russian looking squigglies on the crates) under 2 moa and after years of service I have still never had a failure with it.

I've heard mixed reviews of the folding kelteks. Aparently 2nd gen are better. I handled them and didn't care for the feel. YMMV.

If pistol caliber carbines are your thing the just right carbine, TNW Aero survival rifle, and thurion defense carbine all have very good reviews from owners. I handled the JR carbine and liked it but I heard stripping and cleaning it can be a pain compaired to the others. They also have take down models. The Beretta is supposed to be very nice and reliable too. I have no experience with it.

I shot a T97 with flat top adaptor for a while and found the controls were not very nice. It also had some failures for me but it was getting quite dirty when they happened. It did shoot really nice when it was working though.

All of those should be close to your budget. Keep in mind if you want to buy extra mags, optics, sling, grips, upgrades, etc. and remember that costs money ontop of your base rifle cost.

CZ858/VZ58 For the win. Excellent platform out of the box. Lots of accessories available, but it doesn't need anything. I prefer mine bone stock. In that price range, nothing really compares.

If you ever needed an illustration of the sad state of NR black rifles in this country it's this thread. Nearly all of the suggestions have been pistol calibre carbines, Chinese battle rifles that started life as wood/steel rifles or Comblocs that started life as wood/steel rifles. The remainder? Plastic garbage.

If you can find a decent Vz.58 go for it. My favourite rifle.

If my budget was a thousand , I would be looking at the Ruger mini -30 ; or mini-14.......I think Cabelas had the Mini-14 on sale a few days ago for a little under a 1000 .
The mini is an ok rifle if all your looking to do is make noise and shoot at jumbo sized targets. It's by far the least accurate rifle mentioned in this post.

Absolute jamomatic, single action, piece of excrement.

one of the most reliable rifles i own.

its a mag issue, for some reason some AO mag catches allow the mags to sit about ten thousands of an inch to low. if your has feed issues (most commonly a second or third round live round stove pipe/stub) buy a surplus usgi mag catch for like $8 and install it...problem fixed.

Looking for my first black rifle that is non restricted and a lot of fun to shoot. What do you recommend and why? I have an sks in ati stock coming but I don't consider it a black rifle really. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Are you set on center fire or will you consider rimfire? For semi-auto plinking fun and affordability? You can get a "black" looking semi-auto rimfire.

How about the Troy PAR? Right around $1k for an optic ready model. Fun to shoot, accurate, NR, lots of ar accessories to spend more money on. What's not to like?
