That is amazing! I watched the Myth Busters show where they tried to split a barrel and they ended up welding a plug in the end to finally get the barrel to split. I don't remember what caliber they were using, but it took 3 tries to get it to split. What is the pink / red thing, a bore sighter?

I'm almost positive that's photoshopped. I remember reading about someone from CGN having their barrel split just like that one last year. And I'm pretty sure it was that exact picture.

Old thread/photoshopped/yada yada yada.... whatever!

Kudos for Dingus for putting up a reminder that with hunting season coming on a little "let's be careful out there" reminder is not such a bad thing!

Good on ya, Dingus!

Here's another pic from the annals of gun folklore of another popular CGN'er (one of the better looking ones) after he failed to check for bore obstructions. :p

get rid of that BS pic.:jerkit:

That's totally fake, either photoshop or someone cut and peeled the rifle to make a story.

Think about it.
If the pressure was so great to cause a split than as soon as a large enough hole appeared than the pressure would drop and no more splitting. It would be impossible to make a "split" that long.
What ever the quality of the steel a "tear" would find a weakness or inclusion in the metal and not make such an even split.

The barel would bulge or split on one side,it's impossible to blow up a gun like that, unless you live in cartoon land.

Is that the next "step" after hairy palm syndrome???

I promise to stop!! I promise to stop!!!:runaway:

I can well imagine that he engaged in some "self abuse", but there are at least two stories that go with his picture. One is that he is "Jimmy Earl", the cousin of someone that a guy at Hornady knows, who dared to shoot a Carcano, and the other I know of is that he was injured by a fireworks mishap. In both cases, the story is supposedly "dead true". Just an example of how crap gets perpetuated.

As far as the barrel split goes... I have seen one very much like that sitting in a sporting goods store in B.C. Belonged to a neighbor of mine. The guy involved was hunting and somehow managed to plug up the barrel with mud. Split very much as the one in the photo.

split barrel

if i remember corectly there is a ruger ultra light .308 with a barrel split like that, hanging on the wall, in 100 mile house b.c. at exeter sporting goods.

My uncle had one that spilt the same way he fell into a stream and neglected to check the bore , it apperantly had ice in it , & was actually used in gun saftey courses . until it turned up missing , would have made a great wall hanger.
