400 yards or less is an EASY shot for a accomplished shooter that has good knowledge of his rifle and ballisitics of the load he is shooting.

If you have a steady rest in prone position and no wind to worry about it really is an easy shot if your shooting an accurate rifle and flat shooting cartridge.

That being said...I firmly believe CLOSER is ALWAYS better....!

I sight-in at 200, I'm prepared for out out to 300 though I don't like to shoot that far and most game is taken at around 80 yards and sometimes closer.

In last couple of years hunting got tough where we hunt so place where we saw 13 moose in the morning before (10 cows 3 bulls ) - has none now...seeing first bull after 5 days of hunt at 251 y...you better shoot well or go home and eat your tag soup...
550 on cow elk, 400 on cow elk, 520 bull moose (2006) 251 bull moose(2008)
shot about 300 rounds before hunting season...enough to give me confidence back.

Most of the deer I have shot have been inside of 100 yards. This year it was probably under 20. The longest I have shot a deer at is 250-260 yards. Used to practice to 300 yards, but try to keep my hunting shots close due to all the other variables that are out of my control.

Since I use a Lee-Enfield No.4 and don't get as much practise as I'd like, the longest shot I think is fair for me to take is 200m, and that is dependent on favourable conditions. And that is the longest at which I have taken a deer. I normally try to get within 100m.

I hunt in a few different places, depending on the wind, and sometimes some of us at the camp will switch spots for a hunt or two. In my usual spot I can see a maximum of 90 yards...in one little spot. Other spots I can see 300 yards or more, but I can't see myself ever shooting that far... I'm not that confident. The first deer I ever shot was my longest shot... 150 yards.

Knowing how to shoot out to 500 yds sure makes them 100 yards or less, easy and respectful on big game.
Vermin have no limits to range...I try and put the fear into them at any range:D

ive taken down game at over 600m in the Alberta flats down south, but shooting that far comes with the confidence of hand loads and allot of range time. The reality of hunting however usually I see most deer n such with in 200m. I shot 2 does this year and one I could have hit with a snowball.
