What rifle to "push bush"

The pump Remingtons are actually quite handy for quick shooting and follow up shots! Took quite a few whitetails that were on a dead run with one of those in 308 myself!

Iuse a 6.5X55 Express rifle .
Pretty gard to beat a quick second shot from this rifle!!

Another Remington 7600 fan. Rifle or carbine.
A pump with the Willaiams WGRS sight (with the screw-in aperture removed)
is just about the fastest for the thick stuff and esay to carry one-handed.
A 1-4 scope (leave it on 1x) mounted as low as possible the next best bet.
I've used both but prefer the scope for taking a watch, stand or post,
whatever you want to call it.
I use a VX-II in 1-4 in QR mounts with 'super low' rings.
The handiest "dogging" guns I've ever used were the old style Ruger 44 mag
(tube magazine) carbine with a peep sight, and a similarly equipped Mod. 92
Winchester converted to 44 mag. Short, light & fast for in-close.

I'm a fan of the 760 rem. pump in 30-06 as well as the BLR in .308.
Both great rifles, quick to point. Rem is iron sighted with buckhorns, BLR is scoped.
I will take the Rem into the thick bush, just because it will be easier to haul through the thick willows and alder where i hunt.
The BLR sees the action on the more open areas, poplar bush.
I make sure to use my flatter nosed, brush breaker reloads in 180gr for the .308, 200gr for the 30-06.
I found/feel that more pointed nose ammo seems to deflect easier when blasting through willow and alder scrub.

Pushing bush?

Alot have listed fine choices sans optics. While I agree with alot of the rifle/cartridge combos except the .357Mag, I still prefer a 4X Wide angle optic or maybe less if you prefer. My Rifle of choice is the BLR81/.308Win with 4X. Never drew on a running deer in close I couldn't get on with the scope,....... and when you are on him, .....that cross hair shows the exact aiming point, not just a front sight covering everything,...everytime. An autoloader. especially the fast handling carbines in .308/.30-06 are a pleasure to follow through on a fleeing Buckaroo,....just squeezing one through each gap effortlessly because of the precise aiming point and the lack of cycling required on my part. There is no better aimed, fast follow-up shots on running deer like there are from a moderate recoiling Semi-Auto. None!

I prefer aperture sights on my No4 Lee-Enfield, M-14,AR-15 etc etc, but in the bush where the deer can blend with the cover and where the scope gives me exact aiming points(front end not just covering whole body) through open area patches as the target flees through the timber, a low powered scope is a must for me.

To fill the stand hunting role,.... while someone else still hunts through while I watch the road, chopping, power-line etc,...I'll take my scoped .270, 7mmRM etc. I want the inherent accuracy here in the rifle. and the hammer affect if I am reaching down that open kill zone to 400 yards. A loud grunt or shout may stop him in his tracks if he feels he's a little ahead of his pursuer's, and them just touch of the old M70. Very satisfying indeed. I threw this in there because of an episode on a power-line with a deer that was running from somebody and a 270FWT lurking in a treestand, seems to ring a bell to me;). Don't ask about the outcome.f:P:

Another vote for a remington 7600 30/06 carbine with peep sight.

or marlin 1894 in 44mag if the field shots aren't too long.

Now that would be an excellent choice! Do you have the forward mounted scope?

No, I did try the forward mount and I know a lot of people swear by it but I just didn't feel right with it ' way out there.'
So it wears a 1.5X5 Leupold with a heavy reticle over the receiver.... works for me, got a nice Mulie first trip out with it.

I agree with you there, it felt like some red dot barska SKS gadget when I held up a frontier with the scope that far away, didn't like the sight picture at all... Nice choice with the Leupy 1.5-5!
