Pushing bush?
Alot have listed fine choices sans optics. While I agree with alot of the rifle/cartridge combos except the .357Mag, I still prefer a 4X Wide angle optic or maybe less if you prefer. My Rifle of choice is the BLR81/.308Win with 4X. Never drew on a running deer in close I couldn't get on with the scope,....... and when you are on him, .....that cross hair shows the exact aiming point, not just a front sight covering everything,...everytime. An autoloader. especially the fast handling carbines in .308/.30-06 are a pleasure to follow through on a fleeing Buckaroo,....just squeezing one through each gap effortlessly because of the precise aiming point and the lack of cycling required on my part. There is no better aimed, fast follow-up shots on running deer like there are from a moderate recoiling Semi-Auto. None!
I prefer aperture sights on my No4 Lee-Enfield, M-14,AR-15 etc etc, but in the bush where the deer can blend with the cover and where the scope gives me exact aiming points(front end not just covering whole body) through open area patches as the target flees through the timber, a low powered scope is a must for me.
To fill the stand hunting role,.... while someone else still hunts through while I watch the road, chopping, power-line etc,...I'll take my scoped .270, 7mmRM etc. I want the inherent accuracy here in the rifle. and the hammer affect if I am reaching down that open kill zone to 400 yards. A loud grunt or shout may stop him in his tracks if he feels he's a little ahead of his pursuer's, and them just touch of the old M70. Very satisfying indeed. I threw this in there because of an episode on a power-line with a deer that was running from somebody and a 270FWT lurking in a treestand, seems to ring a bell to me

. Don't ask about the outcome.
