What rings? Is this a good place to start?

Hello all. So I picked up a savage model 12 FTR and a vortex viper PST 6-24x50. Is this a reasonable start for precision and long range shooting it maxed out the budget so I hope so. Also any on know what rings I'll need? Do I need the extra high because of the heavy barrel?

Welcome and you have our sympathies! This sport will continue to drain your wallet if you are not careful.

I cannot comment on the two products you mention. You'll have to try them out with other rings to see. Do you have a pair of cheapo aluminum rings to measure with?

My experience with hunting scopes was to choose tops that had four top-down screws. For a carrying rifle, aluminum was best. But steel is preferred for strength and rigidity. Of course, those benefits come with a pricetag.

Have you heard of the Sask' Provincial Rifle Association's 1200yd range in Nokomis? It has measured firing points at 300, 5, 6, 8,9,1000, 1100 and 1200. You'll be able to do some true long range tests there. They have a FB page which is better than their website.

You likely won't need extra high rings. Those are generally reserved for AR platforms. I just mounted a 6-24x50 Vortex AMG on my Remington 700 heavy barrel using low rings. Nightforce Xtreme 4 bolt rings to be exact. Try to decide how much you're looking to spend on rings, then go to a store that has them, and test fit them before buying. Ideally you want the Bell of the scope as close to the barrel as possible while still being comfortable behind the rifle without having to smash your face down on the stock to see through the scope.
Unfortunately Regina has pretty slim pickings for gun stores right now with the closure of wholesale sports. If you ever make it out west, check out hunt's hunting supplies in Gull Lake, or Bowyer's outdoor sports in Maple Creek. Both great guys that can help get you set up. There is a calculator that you can use to determine ring height needed but being on my phone I can't seem to link to it. Maybe just google scope ring height calculator and see if it comes up.

I got the same scope for my 10TR and went with the Vortex Precision Matched rings, low mount due to the one piece rail as recommended by Vortex. They are expensive though, $200...

I have a 20MOA Weaver rail and Vortex Tactical rings mounting my Viper 6.5-20x50 on my savage 12, can't recall the height for sure, but I think they are medium. Works well together. I'd suggest a 20MOA rail if long range shooting is in your future.

Thanks guys. Yes there is a rail on the action already but I'm not sure if it is a 20MoA or just a straight oicatinny rail. And yes pickings are slim for rings here. Wholesale had a lot more selection that Cabelas does. On my TC encore I have a 1" scope with a 50mm objective using high rings and it just clears the barrel. But it only works because the barrel is lower than the action. I guess I'll try the mediums and start from there.

Thanks.

Look into Burris XTR Signature rings. Interchangeable inserts allow between 0 and 40 MOA cant. Mystic Precision is where I got mine. I also use Ken Farrell rings on a different rifle, they're very well made, but heavier as they're made of steel.

I have the same scope and have used it on 2 different Savage rifles with medium rings.
I have Nightforce steel rings which I have lapped on most of my centerfire rifles except one which has a set of Vortex Precision Matched rings.
Both have been quite excellent.

Is there still a gun store in Assiniboia? There were two guys in Moose Jaw (Garry and another guy). One had the shop on the east side of town, just about the last building before the fast roads merged, and the other had a workshop in his backyard.
