What scope is rugged and cheap for the M14?

I've given up on the Norinco M14s sights; I have to give up before I wreck them.

So I've got to scope it. I've decided on the Enterprise mount (Weaver) but I don't want to spend a lot of money on a scope. Having heard that M14 eats scopes for breakfast and dinner; what is cheap and durable?

I don’t care if it's fixed 1 -4X, ugly as sin, or isn’t crystal clear, just so long as it holds zero, is water proof, and will take a severe beating. Under $100 would be nice too.

Does such an animal exist?

I've got an old Leupold VX I could take of my Ruger M77 (300WM) would that work? I'd rather not destroy it.

I used a Bushnell 4-12 AO on a Parker Hale .308 for years without any problems. A friend uses one on his FN L1A1 without problems. Cost at Wal Mart about $125.

Bushnell 3200 tactical fixed 10x with mildot reticle. About $225 cdn.

Big +1 there. A little more than you're looking to spend, but you might be able to shave a few bucks off if you can find a used one. This scope is very similar to the 10x B&L scope used on the M25 (m14-based) sniper rifles.

Do you plan to hunt with the rifle? If so you may be better off with a variable that allows lower magnification for close shots. Otherwise the 3200 10X is an excellent choice if you can swing it.

I'm currently using an old weaver K6 that I got off the board for about $50. They have a reputation for being very tough, but I've only put a few rounds through this rifle with it, so I can't comment on how long it will take the beating. I've used it on other rifles without trouble though, and the scope body shows it's had a rough life without any problems.

As mentioned before I plan to change to a different scope when I can.

A CHEAP SCOPE WILL BREAK... I PROMISE!

I broke two cheap bushnell ones on my rifle...

Please go with something around 200... otherwise you'll regret it.

m14 likes to takes scopes and play the drums with them.

+1.... yes, M14 likes to eat cheap scopes....
spend more, take Bush 3200, but install it 90 degrees to the right, making elevation adjustment as a windage, and windage as an elevation...
in this way, the casing will not hit the target turrets…..

This is why I'm going the forward mounted route. Is it the spent brass that hits the mount that causes the failure or the pounding of the cycling bolt? Whatever it may be, I figure to stay clear of that area.

You can use a shell deflector plate if that's your concern, but aside from nicking the finish up, ejection does little damage. It's the overall violent cycling of the m14 action that plays havoc with optics

Hey guys...Is this a 30mm scope or a 1" tubed one? I've looked it up online and can't seem to determine this....

Thanks, Jeff.

AFAIK, there are no 30mm bushnell scopes. Not a problem if you're not going to be shooting past 700 or 800 yards, give or take.

I've got the Bushnell 3200 fixed 10 power on my M-14 and I dont have any problems with the casings hitting the turrets....not one has ever hit the scope...I was worried about it at first and installed the scope at 90 degrees but decided to put it how its supposed to be and try it out.....The casings dont hit...its all good!!!!!

I have yet to mount optics on my 305, but it appears that the brass ejects out more to the rear and sideways than upwards. Still the 10x has gi-normous knobs, so I wasn't sure

My leupold clone held up very well. Inexpensive , decent glass, held a zero...500 rounds later it is still going strong. I would recommend it to anyone who would like a decent low price scope.

I am still going to upgrade to the real thing eventually once I begin to upgrade my rifle...

+1

Mine did admirably well, too.

I'm currently selling one right now too if anyones interested in it.

Its the IR 3.5-10 30mm mildot reticle.

The Bushnell 3200 10X mildot is a 1" tube.

Thanks Speckfire! :)

This scope has those huge turrets alright...I'm just wondering if I really need a scope with these large, easy to adjust adjustments...I guess this is for "ranging" work - is it?

Jeff.

Hi
+1 For Elite 3200 X10... as well as Chi Leupold 3.5-10x40 30mm clone.
Had both on my M14, they work great.
But: those turrets have proven themseves to be absolutely useless if rifle is used mainly for hunting. In fact, Chi Leupold clone's turrets were REAL pain of the neck - really easy to disposition them while carrying rifle in a bush. Bushnell's adjustments are way too big, too.

I tend to stick with Bushnell Tropy 3-9x40 mildot as it does not have parts popping up too far. How's about that?
