What shoots best out of your Marlin 1895?

Hello folks, I finally had a chance to take a couple shots with my new 1895 45-70. I was only shooting at my steel target, so I don't have exact measurements, but it was shooting about a foot high.

I was shooting Hornady Leverevolution 250 grain monoflex at about 100 yards at a 12" circle of steel. It shot over the steel no matter where the rear ramp was set. This leads me to believe that a heavier bullet would probably put this rifle in the sweet spot.

So tell me what shoots well from your 1895s!

Thanks,

Bill

X2 in regards to never scoping. With full bore handloads I know I wouldn't have an eyebrow left.

Understandable. On my 1895GS I have mounted, using a set of Weaver Pivot mounts, a 1x4 Leupold VARI-X II.

The initial reason for adding the scope was to make up for eye sight that isn't quite what it once was. The scope helps in load testing and paper punching but as has been mentioned, :redface:I have felt it brush my eyebrow slightly when playing with some of the hotter load and heavier bullet combinations. For hunting/field use, it 'may' end up coming off. We'll see.

This is the selection of cast bullets I use, primarily for lighter loads but some heavier stuff as well on occassion. IMR 4227, 2400 and Unique + a filler with some of the lighter loads. Heavy loads, cast and jacketed, IMR 3031 ans IMR 4198.
For jacketed, there are basically three I use. Hornady 350gr FP, Speer 400gr FN and the Remington 405gr FP.

A couple of targets, shot with the Marlin and a Pedersoli Sharps and primarily lighter plinking loads

Micro-groove rifling in a 1978 no cross bolt safety.Didn't like IMR 3031 for the 350gr .Wearing a 4x Leupold and I still got both eyebrows! Harold

Since your rifle is shooting too high, it is an easy thing to replace the front sight with another that is taller. It won't take much extra height to lower point of impact. I like the Williams fire sight better than the original anyway, easy to see in dark bush or at twilight.

Work!! You mean you have much fun ahead. Enjoy.

Looking at the bullet you've listed on your target as being used for your results, rang a little bell.

In my jacketed bullet storage shelves, tucked behind the 45 cal bullets on the bottem right, I found a bag of 100, Remington 300gr SJHP bullets. I had totally forgotten all about them 'til I saw what you had listed on your target. I'll have to give them a try.

Johnn, your bullet stash looks something like mine although mine is more messy! I guess I should tidy it up. Heaven knows what I might find.

I think I'm going to have to 'sift' through the shelves every once in a while, just to see what other suprises surface. I 'needed' something to feed through a recently acquired Kimber 45ACP so I picked up some 200gr cast from a friend locally that's hot & heavy into casting. When I went to put them in my cast bullet storage area, I 'found' a couple hundred + 45 cal 245grSWs I had forgotten I had. All my cast are stored in a semi organized fashion under my reloading bench.

WOW is your loading room ever neat and tidy

I'm 'somewhat' limited space wise so I have to try and make the effort otherwise I'd misplace more than just the odd package of bullets. It's bad enough as it is now. I view from the batwing doors between my den and the reloading room.

Oh, also had to tidy up a bit as the previous trip Ted made to the island, he stopped in to load some ammo for a relative in Naniamo.
