Good evening everyone. Just got this in the mail today. '52 Tula SKS refurb. Pretty sure the Russian State Arsenal didn't mark "Made in Russia" on things they built or refurbished. To my dismay, the bolt is painted black. This paint crap is on all the metalwork that should be blued, and the bolt carrier looks bead blasted. Looking at the bore, it doesn't appear to be chromed, if I compare everything to my '55 Tula refurb laminate. Rear cover is '52 Tula, and I wonder if that is the only original piece.

Insight would be appreciated. This is the third SKS for me, so far the biggest let down. This is what is under the gas tube.

Need to see more pics to answer your questions properly. That is a marking required by Russian export laws, though it is probably UN compliant too.

ON-CKC is the Russian abbreviation for Orugenia SKS, which means: "Rifle, SKS".

But how does it shoot?

I mean, it's an SKS, not a paper wrapped number 4 that someone doodled in crayon on.

Can't tell you when they appeared but any mil surp leaving Russia must be remarked for civilian use. By Russian law, not ours. The ones that don't have this marking most likely came from Ukraine.

I kinda like the bbq paint hides the nicks and scratches. Makes them look new. I bet the bbq paint stops it from rusting.

Can't say I have any with "Made In Russia" but I do have a donor with a bbq bolt. Easily the most clunky/rough functioning one I have.

I have two with "BBQ paint". One has the same markings.

Both are getting Tapco'd and I will de-Tapco and restore two others to their original form.

I paid $150 for one of them in trade. That's about what they are worth...

ОП means hunting and fishing actually. So it was remade to be a hunting rifle pretty much.
There are a couple of differences from the regular sks. Just research it

ОП-СКС. Oхотничье-Промысловый СКС means milsurp SKS which was reclassified as hunting carbine according to Russian regulations. Standard modern refurb done by Molot with new QC markings from government agency proving that firearm is good to be fired after refurb. The only way people back home can own milsurp if it's reclassified as "hunting firearm". All new surplus refurbs are reclassified as hunting "carbine" now and have those markings. AKM, RPK, PPSh, K98, SVT, Mosin, Maxim MG etc. It's just a loop hope used to sell milsurp to regular people.

You are right, there are differences between regular and ОП SKS but from what I understand ОП versions that we get do not have those mods done to them. My guess they are selected for export and avoid the mutilation. Two mods off the top of my head - removed bayonet/bayonet lugs, tiny pin in the barrel/chamber/mod to an ejector in order to make shells/bullets to have unique markings. Don't ask me about pins, doesn't make much sense but it's the law back there.

Yep. I speak russian so It was no problem for me to go and read all about it haha. They also modify the sights to 300meters. Just so you know.

And yeah, maybe they dont actually modify them at all. That i dont know about. But those are the only 3 differences (bayonet, pins and sights) from the regular SKS that I have read about.

It is a Molot mark. It is required by Russian law to be able to export Military Surplus firearms. It is illegal to export them by Russian law so by marking them in this way, the exporters work around the law by classing them as "Hunting" or "Sporting" firearms and are thus able to get around the law. It is what it is. It will still go bang every time you pull the trigger. It is still SKS Comrade.
