Kind of not sure which one I want to go with right now was leaning toward a 300 win mag then started thinking about others .
Picked up a nice rem 700 mag action last week and ended up getting a nice laminate stock for free on top of that lol.

I've been wanting to build a magnum for a while now and not sure what I am going to go with , the 300 ultra interests me but then I'll have to grind the feed lips a bit on the action to get them to go in , the 338 win mag is also one I was looking at then there was the stw but I already have a 284 so don't know about another 7mm.

Gonna use this for sitting in a stand overlooking some long fields for deer

Unless you handload, a good selection of 300 WM ammo is a heckuva lot easier...and cheaper...to find than .338 WM, and especially for the .300 RUM. And a lot less punishing at the range.

300 WM if you wanna buy factory loads all the time, 338WM if you like reloading, i have both, reload exclusively for the 338, the 300 is new so not sure how i wanna deal with it yet, but price of factory rolled is a third less for the 300 WM though

I have a 300 Win Mag and a 338 Lapua and had a 300 RUM.

If just for deer hunting, the 300 Win Mag is overkill for deer at distances shorter than 300-400 yards. I liked the 300 RUM, because it could launch the heavies at ridiculous MV's and it irritated the: "but it's an inefficient barrel-burner" crowd, but after playing with it, I realized I'd never hunt with it, so it's someone else's toy now. The 338 Lapua is a target rifle.

Not everything has to make sense, but I'd choose the 300 Win Mag.

FWIW, if I were after a pure "deer" rifle, I'm all over the 25.06...although granted a .257 Roy would be a tad ###ier.

Have taken deer with a 30.30, .303 Brit, 30.06 and .300 WM, and none of those consistently flatted deer like my 25.06. No idea why that is, just Thor's hammer on that size of game! More one shot DRT kills with it than all the rest of 'em combined!

Rembo they aren't quite as big as the stories at tim hortons lol ,so maybe the 300 win might be ok in this case. Still looking for someone with a moose license in my area I'll supply the gun ammo and 1/2 the gas :d .

I've got a 30 cal barrel already made up here so maybe 300 win mag if I can get some good brass soon.

Out of your choices the .300 Win. The Rem 700 mag length is a match made in heaven for the .300, you can reach the lands and still have a repeater with just about any bullet. If my .338 kills any better Ive never been able to see it. Maybe if we had a bunch of Buffalo to shoot and a 250 grain bullet seemed warranted. Although it isn't my favorite it still is a decent cartridge.

Ordinarily I don't care much about barrel life, but after my RUM puked after 600 rounds I've re-evaluated that position. The if you're the box a year for 30 years type it would be OK, but if youre the box a week type don't bet on making much more than half a year. That's moderately depressing.

Well it looks like it's gonna be a 300 win mag after some thought I have about 10lbs of H1000 already here and lots of 30 cal bullets.

The only thing I need to decide now is if I'm going to make a 4 or 6 groove barrel for it kind of leaning towards a 4 thinking I could push it a bit faster.
I have a good match chamber reamer for it that cuts well all I need to find is a set of dies and there's lots of brass in town .

If you are interested in long range game shooting, the .300 Winchester has much to offer. It's trajectory with a 230 gr Berger VLD beats that of the .338 Lapua when loaded with 250 gr MKs, and nips at the heals of the Lapua loaded with 300s.

OK, while we're comparing .300s to big .338s here's a couple of mine.

My .338 Edge that you shot with 300 grain SMKs loses 3 MOA in elevation to one of my 300 Wins shooting 190 LR Accubonds at 1000. On paper the .338 gains about one click on the windage knob at that distance, but proving it by shooting is a difficult thing. In practice I treat them as identical. Not bad for 5 pounds less rifle. :)

I have and use all the 30 cal magnums, and they are all 700s. Of all of them I have fallen in love with the 300 Wby, it fits nicely into a 700 action, you don't have to mess with the rails and it will do with a 200 gn bullet what the 300 WM does with a 180. I have hunted a great deal of the globe with my 300 Wby and have never found it lacking inside 600 mtrs. With the new homogenous bullets of 165 gn, it shoots fast and flat and has sufficient velocity to make them work properly. I still prefer the 200 gn Accubond and have killed several truck loads of game with this combo. I highly recommend the 300 Wby, it's recoil isn't noticeable above the 300 WM and is significantly less than the 300 RUM, while still doing anything the RUM will do within normal hunting ranges of 600 mtrs or less. The 338 isn't even in the same league with the big 30s IMHO and experience. I have found the 30 cal magnums to be a far superior killer on medium sized game up to and including bison and eland. They also reach out much better than the 338 and arrive with far superior killing power at and beyond 300 mtrs.
I have also killed a few truck loads of game with the 300 WM and I have nothing bad to say about it, but the 300 Wby is just a little more of an already good thing and functions through the same length action and the same weight rifles nicely.
