What to buy for first pistol

If you want inexpensive and decent check out the 1911 Norinco 9mm Sport from Marstar. $350. Buddy of mine just got one. Very nice, shoots well and is accurate.

S&W SD9VE a glock copy. About $430.00. It is light / thin and frugal. Some people have an issue with the trigger but mine has sorted out after 500 rounds. Info on the net. I have a light and laser on it.My daughter out shot me last trip to the range with it . I was shooting my CZ85. Meh!

Lots to think about... I like milsurps so I am leaning toward a Yugo M70A in 9mm or maybe a (good) P38. I shot a Browning Hi-power the other day and I like it.

If I could do it over again, I'd buy a CZ Shadow from the start. But if your looking for a small single stack, maybe a Boberg? Or a Sig P239 Tactical. It'd be over $1,000 though unless you could find it used. But in that criteria its slim pickings unless your okay with a 1911 platform.

I'd agree it's sort of 1911 ish and an absolute tack driver

Try a few different pistols, you may be surprised that you end up with something different from what you thought you wanted.

Springfield Armory Range Officer 9mm

or

CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow with thin Aluminium Grips
(it is not single stack but the grip is very slim with the slim grips)

Both are very good, very realiable, very accurate, and good for both range use as well as competition if you decide to do some for fun in the future.
The Shadow Line comes stock with the thin grips

I've got small hands as well. The 1911's fit nicely along with other 9mms like Sig 226 with the e2 grips, CZ75 Sp-01 Shadow with aluminum grips, Glock 19, M&P9, Walther PPQ M2 and HK SFP9/VP9. Interestingly the double-stack HK45 fits me well also. Lots of choice out there if you are able to try them out. Holding them is one thing but you really need to shoot them to test the ergos regarding recoil impulse, mag eject and reach to safety (if it has one).

BeaverMeat... here are a few pistol you could research. Browning High Power, new they are well over $1g but on the use market they are around $550. Star model B, a 1911 clone in 9mm. They are identical to the Norinco 1911 in 9mm but the fit and finish is much better. Norinco 1911/9mm, what can I say, it's a Norinco. Fit and finish is not as nice as the Star but it does go bang. Both the Norinco and Star is about $350. My top choice, if money is no object is a brand new High Power... just love mine but believe it or not, coming a close 2nd for single stack is my Zastava m70a. It is a Tokarev TT in 9mm and they are currently $300 brand new, with 2 magazines, cleaning kit and case. Factor in the cost and the Zastava comes out on top, time and time again. I now shoot the m70a more than my Beretta 92fs or PX4 now. When they first hit Canada, they were only $220 and now the prices are begining to creep up. $300 for a full metal John Browning designed pistol... I say don't walk but run to pick up one before they stop importing or the prices go up. You will be kicking yourself if you don't. good luck.

I generally dislike double stack pistols for being too obese and to me the 1911 is what God whispered down into the ear of his final prophet (melodrama, but it makes the point)

However in 9mm - CZ75/85, and Browning High Power are 2 that I like. I prefer the CZ (Shadow) of them all. It's the European 1911 ;)

It's (CZ) as nice as you can get in a double stack IMHO
