What to do if you're scoped?

What to do if you're glassing for game and see that you're being scoped by a hunter

  • Hit the dirt and fire a single round over the head of the hunter so it's obvious you're pissed

  • Hit the dirt and sneak away reconciling yourself that there will always be those a**holes with us

  • Walk toward him to try to make contact so you can tell him what he is doing is stupid

  • Wave your arms frantically to get his attention and show him that you are another hunter

Ah Cat n the Hat you are right... forgot about the mens rea. Sounds kinda like diahrea.... anyways i was just trying to find a way around the confrontation some argue for while avoiding the duck and run and hope it gets better or goes away that others propose. Take care.
 
Being the jackass that I am, I'd probably shoulder my rifle and glas them right back, close the bolt and flip them the bird... jsut to let them know I was pissed and I was watching them watching me.

On the other hand... I'm not a big game hunter, and when we go after varmints, we stick in a close-ish group... the biggest worry amongst us is putting a hole in someone's bed-rail or roof rack because we forget that sight picture is higher than bullet trajectory at the muzzle :p

Binoculars are for spotting... a rifle scope is for killing.... period.

I realize what binoculars are for REDD, and what rifles are for, but you and I are not every idjit out there, and it can be dangerous, yes.

However, a person would have a hard time proving that another had criminal intentions in mind when looking through a rifle scope at something he thought was an animal.
Our court system being what it is , this would be a lesson in frustration.
Far better to keep a cool head than to go off the head at someone when you both have firearms at hand, especially when you do not know the other guy!

I hear ya Cat.... I didn't understand the intent of your post. And you are right.... this is something that could have serious repercussions.:cool:

I have never been accused of having a cool head... and it has come around to bite me on the ass a few times.;)

Criminal intent isn't necessary. If someone is pointing a gun at you he's breaking the law regardless of what his intent might be.

I've never been scoped. But on those occasions where I've had guns pointed at me in the field I've moved out of the line of fire and had some very blunt words with the owner. If I were scoped I'd do the same if possible.

We wear orange. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that an orange spot is not your long-dreamed moose.
But still, that guy down the power lines,,,, he's doing something..... What in the heck could he be doing? let me see.... oh he's setting up some bait or checking dsome tracks down there.... what kind of tracks?;;;;;; BOOOOM!!! OOPS Better bail out.... oh, I hope I didn't kill him...

Orange is not a solution. It takes a lot of restrain not to use a scope as a binocular when the latter is missing from your camp list.....

As a side note, I know of 4 people in the last 15 years that were killed while wearing orange or red , by hunters ( apparantly all "seasoned hunters")!:eek:
Two were shot off a quad.
It is beyond me......

Before i left Mcmurray i used to hunt the area where this is posted quite frequently. I have a hunting article regarding the crime and to this date it is still unsolved. There is someone on this earth that knows what they did and will not fess up. I am hoping its not a mcmurrayite and that my family or i know him/her. It was also on Unsolved Mysteries. I read the article from time to time to remind myself of the deadly repercussions and impact of pulling a trigger on a firearm. I took the photo to remind myself and too teach my kids the danger our sport can have if we are not fully aware of what we have in our line of sight.

I was hoping you would chime in with that WIN94, If I notice someone pointing a rifle at me, that monument would flash through my head I would be going to ground real quick. I 'd be a lot more worried about cover and lot less worried about teaching lessons etc.

.......exactly. I would be of the flight instead of fight mentality as well.
