What to do with rusty steel shot?

I was recently given 30lbs of steel shot. 20lbs of BB and 10lbs #2. One of the bags has no plastic liner and must have gotten wet. Is there any way to salvage the one bag or is it no good now?

Make a shot bag out of it for sheet metal work.

Clean it? Try putting some in a bucket with a bit of diesel and moving it around. Then dump it out on some rags.

What about mixing it with some CLR and soaking for a while. Can always make a bag to shoot off of.

maybe try automotive rust remover and drain in an old pillow case... gonna be a pita tho

put in a sack shake off the loose rust flakes, load and shoot. The shot goes into a cup amd doesn't touck the barrel anyway. Ducks or geese will not complain about rusty shot. lol

Agree with the suggestions for a wet tumbler - a bit of Lemishine and dish soap will likely assist, just make sure you can get it dry right away.

If you try and get the rust off with some of the mentioned methods, be sure to dry it over heat and then put it in a container with a bit of graphite and shake it around. The graphite will stop it from rusting again right away. The graphite also stops it from becoming a slug when it all rusts together in the shell. Hunting over salt water has all kinds of interesting scenario's.
