what to use to tape up a barrel

I use tape on the muzzle all of my rifles while hunting. It keeps out snow, pine needles and anything else that might otherwise end up in the barrel. One piece of scotch 88 about 1-1/2" long holds fine.I don't wrap any around the barrel.

i gonna try stick tape and mabe tuck tape, i tried to find scotch 88 but the hardware store doesn't carry it

Someone should do a tape test and report back.

Scotch tape
Duct tape
elec. tape
packing tape
floral tape
masking tape
painters tape

Years ago I tested most brands of condoms and they all perfomed flawlessly.:)

You can use peanut butter to remove any sticky residue from any tape left behind on the barrel. Or use it to remove sap from hands. Peanut butter is an amazing cleaning product.

Interesting about the duct tape...I've used it a few times with no problems, but they are always stainless barrels. Electrical tape is still my preference. I've used finger cots, and they work, but are fragile.

Thats even worse as duct tape glue contains chlorine which will lead to chemically induced stress corrosion cracking ( especially in stainless). And you'll never identify this until the a piece of the barrel falls off, as the corrosin occurs in the granular interspaces of the metal.

Wow, bummer for all those metal ducts that are taped up wiht duct tape!!:D

anyone ever try an earplug? actually, i am too nervous to put anything over my barrel after the guy teaching my core 18 years ago showed me what happens when "stuff" is in the barrel. so you can actually wrap electrical/tuck tape on tightly to seal it totally off and it won't affect your accuracy or blow your barrel up?

Actually the air pressure between the bullet and the condom, ear plug, tape, etc pushes it off.

What the teacher was talking about was twigs, mug, ice form snow etc creating a hard plug. What's listed above are soft plugs, meaning that they aren't jammed in.

And even twigs, mud, ice etc... MIGHT be a problem, always keep obstructions out of your bbl but even these hard plugs will often blow out with no damage.

My buddy, who was teaching the firearms safety course took a single shot 12 to the range to try to blow it up for demo purposes, using a string on the trigger and hiding behind a dirt wall he tried numerous times to blow it up by jamming a 20 gauge shell in the bbl with a 12 behind it.
Finally in the end he had to put the bbl in the dirt and pack about 8" of dirt in it, it blew up but it wasn't dramatic and the shooter would have very likely been fine. But then again I have seen the result of a gun being fired just above the surface of the water (shooting a Tuna or shark or something) and it was very scary looking. Banana peeled and everything, just like on TV!
