What type of 30.06?

From your list I would buy the CZ550. I built a custom 6.5X55AI with that action. CRF, 3 position safety, set trigger...
I will be buying more CZ's. My next build will be a .338-06 Improved aka .338 Scoville, then a 280AI, both with 550's.

As current production rifles go, I think a one-rifle hunter shooting a .30-06 would be very well served by a current production Model 70. I'm hard pressed to think of a single reason why anything else is better. Perhaps a bit cheaper, sure. But better?

Having said that, though, my go-to '06 is a Rem 700. This one was rather like the gal that sneaks up on you over time. After enough successful hunts together, and a few character marks on both the rifle and the shooter, the old gal and I just seem to belong together. When you get to that point with a rifle, as with a woman, it really doesn't matter what the other models look like...

I'd be hard pressed to ignore a new Winchester.

That'd be my first pick.

Secondhand Ruger No1, Winchester '95, or Winny/Browning high wall.

That's more my list than yours, probably ;)

No wrong answer in that list! Class in each on of those.

Another great choice... But, it seems to me, that pictures of said rig should accompany a post like this... :)

If it were me I'd get a good Husqvarna 1640. But the Rem 700 Mtn rifles are nice too. I have 30-06's in each of those. But a nice FN Model 70 FWT would make a good rifle as well. I have a couple x-bolts, though not in 30-06, and I really like those. Nothing wrong with a Tikka T3 Hunter.

There's lots of good rifles out there. Old and new. Try to handle as many as you can before buying. Maybe some people in your new hunting group can take you to the range or something and let you shoot some of their rifles. Then you can get a feel for what you'd like to have. Some people insist on having a cheek peice on the stock. Others don't mind if it's just a plain straight stock. Some people need a detachable magazine. Other's hate them. The more you can hold and shoot, or even just handle in a store, then the better off you'l be. Here on the 'net, you'll just be hearing other people's biases. You need to formulate some of your OWN.

The CZ, Browning bolt or 700 are all decent rifles. I have heard a few complaints over quality with the 700 and to a lesser degree the CZ but I have no first hand experience of this. I find the BLR in long action to be too heavy and bulky personally.

I'm new to this forum and I'm not familiar with the collective "likes and dislikes" here, but if budget is a concern, I'd look at the Weatherby Vanguard Series 2. In my mind it is a lot of gun for the money. It is guaranteed sub moa out of the box with factory ammo. As far as synthetic stocks go, I think this one is rather nice. I also like the trigger, but of course, YMMV. I got mine in 30-06 new for under $500 and it shoots 0.5" groups at 100y out of the box with Remington Corelokts. Nice gun.

I have the pleasure of directing you for your first .30-06 a lovely FN made Winchester Model 70 Featherweight. Chambered in your caliber of choice,......... if the question is Moose and black Bear .30-06 is never a wrong answer,......and wrapped up in one of the most lovely bolt action sporters ever made, bar none,.... the M70 featherweight. At what price you ask? I can get a Finka for 650 -700 bucks some say. Well you can have this lovely baby BNIB for 665.00 Canadian sawbucks. State of the art trigger, gorgeous American Black Walnut, 6 3/4 lbs, Controlled round feed, if that turns you on, and of course the classic Schnabel fore-end. PM me and I'll put you on to the dealer.

FIT - the best shoes in the world 2 sizes too small isn't going to do much for you. Also, how does it feel when it recoils. You can't hit if you are flinching.
FUNCTION - a hunting rifle has to function above all else, see the if the store will let you run dummy rds through the rifle you want to buy. If it stalls, move on
PERFORMANCE - Decide on how you want to use the rifle, load up some ammo and hopefully, reach the level of performance desired.
APPEARANCE - If you like what is in your hands, it goes a long ways to a successful hunt
PRICE

We have never had a wider selection of very useable hunting rifles. Pick them up, cycle them, shoulder them, pick the one that fits the above for you.

I have been invited into a friends hunting group and will be going next season for moose & black bear. I have settled on getting myself a 30.06 but am undecided on which one. I have thought about a Browning BLR, CZ 550 Lux, CZ 550 FS, Remington 700, Browning X Bolt. I would like to keep it at or under one grand for the gun.

The hunt camp is up in the Cochrane ON area. I also really like the look of a wood stock but should I consider a synthetic instead? I was told they have done both tree stand hunting and stalking so I am looking for something easy to handle in the bush. Any suggestions on what I should look at?

I think the 3006 is a very good choice for general use.

As Mystic mentioned you should shoulder a few and see how they fit, see what feels "right".

I have a CZ 550 and I'll be buying another. These are very well made and accurate rifles.

Cannot go wrong with the Model 70. One of my hunting partners bought one, after we set the trigger to about 3.5lbs we were getting ragged hole groups as is with an Elite 3200. I think his is called the Extreme Weather.

Another underrated rifle that is worth a look is the Ruger Mark II's.
