What was the least favorite .22 cal rifle or handgun you owned?

Remington 597.

May I ask which "generation" of mags you had for it?

Thunderbolts work well in semis with feeding issues because the lead compound in the bullet is a really hard and doesn't deform when it hits the chamber at a bad angle. Hard lead is lighter than soft lead and is ballistically inefficient and terminally ineffective, but it does feed well.

Fully agreed. This is one point many neglect to mention when they "pan" T-bolts.

i love the cooey 39, but their model 64 has given me grief.

my worse of all time was a model 60 that my great uncle hunted his rabbits with. stock had all this tape on it, took it apart to find a split stock, and the thing never fed a round.

(1) the 64 needs a good extractor, for sure...(2) even a model 60 can be trashed, it seems...

for rifle, Henry US survival, total POS doesnt feed, innacurate, and fugly

Might I ask what ammo you tried?

Remington 597.

Really? Did you try the new generation mags or loosen the bolt guide rail screws? I did both of those things and I haven't had a single FTF or FTE that wasn't a problem with the brand of ammo I was using. Even the remington 30rd mags work pretty well.

It's pretty accurate, too. I have no problem getting 2 or 3 inch groups at the 100m point with little effort on my part. I'm sure if I used premium ammo, that would improve some.

some marlin bolt action 22 mag i had. my first rifle. bought it at Canadian tire in 1991,.It was accurate as hell , but didnt feel right. the stock was just uncomfortable. then after 50-100 rounds it just wouldnt extract. shells were stuck in the chamber.finally broke extractor, had it repaired cleaned and still same issue. traded that for lakefield mkII. dont miss it and probably never buy another marlin.

Ruger mkII was not that accurate but that is not the issue. it is just not that fun to shoot....but taking it apart for cleaning ...man i hated it. just couldnt deal with it.

For me: 10/22.

Waaaaay too much money for what it is. Accuracy is ho-hum, mag is cool but lack of a LS hold open is a big negative, all in all, if the 10/22 was intro'd today as a new rifle offering, it would ONLY sell at around 100.00...that's about what it's real value is.

i totally agree. accurate as hell, but overpriced....thats why i dont have another one yet.

I don't know what gen the mags were. I bought it two years ago if that helps.

I don't hold anything against the 597 as a whole. I might have got a lemon. I just prefer the 10/22. I'm not a remington hater I have a 870 and a 700 and love both.

I own two right now, my gun is modded to the point where the only stock parts are the reciver and trigger housing. It shoots loonie sized groups at 100 with pmc match rifle and I've shot thousands upon thousands in it with no issues, It spent a few years bone stock and the only issues it had were not liking certain ammo's. With minimags I could go through bricks of ammo without issues,

The other is pretty well stock except for the stock and barrel. It's the wife's gun, the one we bought after the 597. It's had the same reliablity with it as well. I've had nothing but good luck with these guns.

I've found that the guys havings issues with their 10/22's have either:

-Over oiled the action. Oil and dirt make a sludge in the action and jam it up. I use very little oil in the summer and run it dry in the winter.

-Use crap ammo. My gun hates winchester xperts and anything remington. Both of my guns run like a top on dynapoints, federal anything, minimags, velocitors, My gun will even cycle pmc match and cci subsonics. The wife's won't.

Worst 22

My worst is a Basque 22 pistol. It is a Spanish look alike of a Walther PP. Notice I said look alike and not a clone. It's chief use is a qualifier for 12(6) class. If anyone else has one, I would be interested in how is dissasemble it. Thanks.

I've heard lots of bad things on the sig mosquito and the walther p22. Some people love them, most hate them it seems.

Personally I own a savage mark II I think, ruger 10/22 target, ruger Mark III pistol and I've never had an issue. My girlfriend has a norinco woodsman copy and even that has been pretty good.

Guess I've lucked out.

Norinco Browning .22 SA Clone

Back in the late 1960's I had seen and fondled the Browning .22 semi-auto and fell in love. When I saw the Norinco copy offered for much less, I got one.

I wanted to buy from Marstar because of their warranty, but they were sold out so I bought one from Lever Arms in Vancouver for $170. When problems arose, they refused to help and suggested I buy some Browning parts. Such great customer relations!

This gun is a work in progress and has gone from total POS to semi-POS. So far, it has had several detail cleanings, new springs from Wolffe, new parts from Marstar and a diet of different brands of ammo. I think I'm getting close to reliable and maybe after some honing of the feed mechanism, it will become a reliable gun. Each time I tweak it, it gets better, and it is quite accurate, so if I get the feeding thing worked out, can I sell it for maybe $150? ( labour not included).

Norinco - you get what you pay for!
