For deer locally, my Stoeger Coach Gun. Up north, my 1895GBL, Marlin 1894 .44, or my full stocked Ranch Hand in .45Colt. Haven't decided yet. The .44 and .45 are both virgins.
This year, I'm finally going to take my little Mauser carbine hunting. I've had it for 15 years now, but it has never been in the field. For most of this time, I was shooting it with a Lyman aperture sight on the range, and it was great. However, age catches up with all of us, and ever since I had to wear glasses, it has been harder and harder to shoot this rifle with sights because of its short sight radius.
This year, I finally broke down and had a new bolt handle installed and had the receiver drilled and tapped for scope mounting by our own Bill Leeper. I also added a new Bold trigger, which I have adjusted to break cleaner than any other Mauser I've ever fired. I also re-bedded the action myself.
From the photos, you can see that Bill did a fantastic job, and this little rifle now comes to the shoulder and cycles better than I could ever have imagined. I am surprised how well my eye automatically lines up with the Bausch & Lomb Elite 2-7 scope as it is mounted in Warne rings and bases.
For years I have joked that this is my version of a lever action .30-30. It's just short and fast enough to be used for woods hunting.
Here are the details: Brazillian Model 1922 (made by F.N. on the shorter 98 action). It is chambered in 7x57 and it has an 18.5-inch barrel. Here is a promising 100-yard group fired with the scope mounted. As always happens, I yanked the fifth shot:
I believe that this rifle will be able to do the job on a deer at ranges out to about 250 yards. For situations where I might reasonably have to make a longer shot, I'll take one of my .300 Winchester Mags or my highly tuned .30-06 loaded with 168-grain Barnes TTSXs.
However, I'm hoping that this little Mauser will be all I need this year.
this year deer and maybe a blacky if i find a large one. i'm using either my tikka battue in 308 with a 150 swift scirroco @ 2900fps or my 338 06 with 200 nbt at 2825fps. i will probably hunt with both this fall.
Browning x-bolt 7mm rem mag with bushnell 4200 2.5-10x40. I just bought the rifle for this deer season as I didn't have a caliber large enough. Here's to hoping I can get a my first whitetail with it.
T3 in 7mag with 162g SST's. Just loaded up some new ammo for it and shot it at 300, 400, and 500 yards with one of those fancy Leupold bullet drop elevation dial for long shots that never happen. Everything is working perfect as usual and she is ready to go. Best gun I have ever owned hands down.
Also my 9.3x64 Brenneke with 286g Partitions. Did the good old one shot group dead center at 200yards trick with it. Always hits in the same spot. Ready to go.
I'll use my T/C Pro Hunter in 8X63Swede for WT and I'm thinking a 9 iron for grouse. Used a 7 last year and found their heads wouldn't clear the tree tops.
