What would happen if SKS disappear from market in Canada (westrifle.com)

Cheap ammo will determine what comes as the next big thing. If 7.62x39 was a dollar a round, very few people would want to shoot it. So, a long term source of cheap ammo will determine what's the next big thing and it would likely have to be shot in a cheap semi-auto platform that shoots said ammo. I could be wrong, but I read that 5.45x39 is not super available, so if 7.62x39 remains super available .... Whatever replaces the sks will shoot that. If 7.63x39 runs dry or gets expensive, maybe the Chinese round 5.8x42???? Who knows, but it will be the cheapest semi-auto that shoots the cheapest ammo.

5.8x42 is banned from export by China.

Even new production (i.e. Tulammo) 7.62x39 is under 40 cents a shot. If all the sudden surplus was gone more people would produce to fill demand, I don't see 7.62x39 going anywhere.

Like others have said, mainly as long as there is cheap ammo anything would be popular. I would agree that if lets say 7.62x39 was 80-100 cents a shot they would be a lot less popular. I know I would not be interested in an sks at that much a round. Leads to the next question, besides .22lr, what is a common, easy to get caliber that is "cheap", in my mind that is the next fad for a rifle.

Which store? Can you order one online? ;)
sorry I will not advertise other companies in Westrifles thread, but they don't ship and don't even advertise due to kickback by some local residents, if you will be in the Halifax area pm me and I can tell you where it is! They are not the quality of Westrifle, they are birch refurbs but good shooters, nice and tight.

I think we are getting near the end of the road when it comes to importing cheap surplus rifles, I think they have been pretty well picked over, and any that are available will not be eligible for importing into Canada.

7.62x39 is going to be plentiful in the near future with new production, non corrosive at affordable rates if the other ammo importers are to be believed. So anything that uses that will remain popular, though the 858's are starting to vanish .

Next to that,I've talked to other importers, and there is LOTS of 5.45 available, like many, many container loads of it...we just don't see it here because we have nothing That shoots it,excerpt AR conversions.

My guess is the surplus rifle market is starting to dry up,but if something could be had that was NR,and could use 5.45,I think that would be a major seller.im surprised the larger importer who already has the ammo, has not used their influence with the manufacturers they deal with to make a rifle in 5.45z

Well...
What's a SKS?
Cheap semi-auto that shoots cheap center fire ammo. Don't care if it is surplus or brand new.

So I believe anything that replaces that.

I'd not buy a 22LR to replace a SKS and vice-versa.

I disagree, I think there are 100's of thousands left in warehouses and old storage mines over there, both in Russia and China! When the political stuff cools off, the rifles will start moving again!

Do you think people will still want them then or will they be off to another bargin rifle

X2

I think there is lots left and hidden away in bunkers and warehouses. They may not meet the demand ( or price) of mass sales what we've become accustomed to, but they will be showing up on the market for the next 50 years in various quantities and condition.

The fact that so many other popular rifles are chambered in X39 makes ammunition dealers itchy to bring it in. Its one of the most popular cartridges in the world and anything but obsolete.

Well that was the OP question, if there were no more SKS, what would be next,, I don't know! could be bad info but I heard more will be coming, and another bargain rifle/ammo combo is no where to be found,so if the price is still good on both, I cannot see why not! Of course, another thing to consider, is the market getting saturated with SKS? Not completely I don't think but there are a lot of them already in Canadians hands. It may not be that there are no more,
but if the price rises much more for the rifle or ammo, a lot less people will want them! As I have said earlier, two shops in Halifax are putting theirs on sale, one right now is $149.99 to reduce their inventory and the other will be $169.99 as a loss leader to get people into the store!
