What would you use?

Handle a bare bones C8 (or your choice of equivalent civilian AR15) with a 14.5" pencil barrel and iron sights.
You wouldn't believe how light and easy to handle it is. Try the lightest, easiest to handle configuration that ever was, then decide how much useless junk/weight you want to add to it.
It won't be much Sir.

Amen! On a SHTF rifle, I wouldn't run much more than a quality dot, a quality sling and a set of backup irons. BFG Vickers is the golden standard sling-wise and I'd be looking at something like Meprolight M21 dot-wise - no electronics to get fried, no batteries to worry about after 500 hours of 50,000 hours, tough, durable, business-like, but with great optics and very fast acquisition if you go with the donut of death ("circle dot") reticle.

Rifle-wise, make it a no-brainer and go with DD. Rock-solid reliable.

I was going to post some thing like
"My 2009 Aimpoint Comp M4 is still running on the factory battery...................yup still on and still working (I just checked). I guess I should change that AA battery out, or wait for it to die a few years from now.

I read this as the OP wants a rifle/carbine to learn to shoot and weapons handling. I doubt he fears a zombie wave washing over the earth or an end of civilized society. My guess is he wants to get good at shooting. "

But I guess I will throw everything I know about CQB, FIBUA, MOUT and FISH and go buy a shotgun. Screw you Delta, what do you know.

if I wanted a longer rifle I would have asked about a longer rifle, same thing goes with a shotty. and Thank you to the guys who have actually read my questions and have given me legit answers. To the guys who are bickering, grow up. Yes, I understand everyone has an opinion but why take it off topic.

With that being Said:

I think I am going to go with a DDMk18, an AIMPOINT PRO, A Vickers single point sling and either an Inforce light (seems to be more dynamic). They offer training courses at RDSC here every so often so I'll be looking into that. I just sent in my renewal for my RPAL before Christmas so I have a bit of time before I actually buy the rifle, doesn't mean I can't start buying the accessory's though!

Another Question though. What are the major differences between an Ecotech and the Aimpoints. If I cannot find a PRO, I'd probably be stuck. this is why I am asking. Thanks again for the legit answers.

Zombies are my last worry, civil distress is my main priority. I live in an apartment building and i'm thinking more about bugging in then bugging out for the current time being.

Aimpoint - 50,000+ hr battery life and you can throw it against a brick wall, put it back on your rifle and shoot the same groups.

Vickers sling - A must for retention

BUS - Lots of options from Magpul to KAC

Flashlight - tons of options but Surefire and Fenix is what I use on mine.

Thank you sir. The input from former Service members means a lot. I have family that have served (parents) and cousins that still serve.

If you live in n urban area, your biggest threat in a SHTF scenario isn't something large and toothy, nor is it starvation, or lack of shelter, it isn't even a lack of water - your biggest potential problem is a breakdown in civil order. That means bugging in, not out and while bugged in being able to present a hard target, an AR that you can effectively use makes you a very hard target.

this is my problem, i'd end up bugging in until they managed to burn down my building :/

Just thought I"d let everyone know, I bit the bullet on a Troy Northern Guard. I got it for a pretty good deal (I think) and so far I am Using the Troy Irons and a Inforce WML. I have added a Phase 5 "BAD" lever to it as well. I like the idea of it, makes it easier to lock the bolt back, and charge the bold when doing mag changes.

it won't be long until you feel the need to get a red dot. aimpoint.
