What's a decent 1911 in 9mm ?

You are confusing the Trojan with the Spartan. They are not the same gun. The Trojan has a US built cast frame (the USPSA and Sentry are forged).

Here's a quote from the FAQ section of STI's website:

Q: Are STI pistols made in America?
A: The Spartans are built for STI (to STI specifications and utilizing STI internals) in the Philippines by the STI division of Armscorp. All of the rest of our pistols are built right here in Georgetown, TX.

Thanks, corrected.

Wow thanks everyone. Tons of stuff to research now; I was hoping to stay south of $800 if possible for the first time out ;)

buy a spartan, you wont regret it. Mine will cross 20 000 rounds this weekend and still shoots good enough for me to get second at today's match with it.

Value for money, SAM. Mid priced - STI Spartan is my pick. STI Trojan - if you are planning to keep it joining IPSC Classic Division. There is also STI-Sentry, a beauty and a step-up from Trojan.

Looks like an STI love fest here but irunguns has some springfield range officers in 9mm.
I picked one up a few weeks ago and love it !! It's around 1000$

I had both the STI Spartan and the Sentry (both in 9mm); still have the Spartan. The Sentry is very, very nice, just not double the gun that the Spartam is (IMHO).

For a $800 budget, Spartan is the way to go. If you can fork the extra $, the Trojan is nice as well. The new US-made frames have undercut trigger guards and smaller rollmarks, both pluses.
