I own ONE A-Bolt ...... just one, in 22/250.
It is accurate, consistent and fits me well. That's the good points.
In heavier recoiling calibers the stock is far too small exaggerating felt recoil. The mag box is way over engineered and quite clunky. They are overpriced. The gold trigger and flashy finish doesn't bode well with all shooters. Some don't like the trigger system, but I haven't had problems with mine.
.
Well, mine as stated, is a 30-06 caliber, and I haven't had any problems with the recoil, quite acceptable really. I also find the stock to be the perfect fit for when I'm shouldering and firing from standing, sitting, laying flat, or any other position I've tried.
Personally, I do wish the mag box was a simpler design like in the Tikka T3 series, but nothing is perfect. I ordered a second mag box that I have pre-loaded and ready to go when the first is empty (This, of course, is when I target shooting, at the range, etc.... not when I'm hunting.)
The gold trigger was another little thing I didn't like, but nothing that I couldn't modify with a little fine sanding and an enamel cam paint I use, so it wouldn't glint while hunting.
I kinda lucked out when I bought mine, in that the guy was opening his store new, and trying to compete against a well-entrenched store across the highway from him. He was selling all new rifles for cost plus 10% for his first month of business, and I got the Abolt Hunter, still in the box, for $650, plus he threw in the scope rings (good ones) and first box of ammo for free. He essentially was taking a loss on the sale of new rifles just to get people to go check out his shop. It worked, because a lot of guys that were starting to get upset with the attitude of the other store now shop at his place. Add that he also deals with handguns and the other guy doesn't, well, he's starting to do really well. I visit his store at least twice a month. If you're interested in the name of the store, PM me, as I don't want to be accused of advertising for shops that aren't sponsors of this site.
Overall, I can see why some people might not like it, but again it's personal comfort for each individual. There will always be people that like a certain firearm, while others will have objections against that same firearm. That's why I told him to take it out and fire some rounds through it himself. Who knows... He might like it just like me, or side with you guys.. But he'll have to try it to find out.
