what's a large flat shooting calibre?

The difference between an 8mm Rem Mag and a .340 Weatherby is basically the bullet diameter of a few thou difference... recoil, hitting power, etc is really the same... it's like comparing a .270 and a .280. If they shoot the same weight of bullet the recoil is the same...

I was just thinking of getting something bigger to shoot for fun and use for larger game, once I've adapted. I will admit my knowledge of ballistics is limited to what is apparently hearsay when it comes to the .308 being the flatter shooting round vs. the 30.06. that's what I hear everywhere concerning those two. I have a couple 30.06's and I'm debating whether to get something bigger or something smaller like the .243 and use that on smaller game.

Assuming your 30-06 is an accurate rifle, or can be made accurate, You woudl be far better off to spend your money on

1. Tuning up the rifle
2. Making good ammunition
3.Learning how to use turrets on a scope
4. Lots of practice

This will get you better results than just buying a "bigger" gun and hoping it shoots flat enough to compensate for distance.

Put a good bullet from your 30-06 through the lungs of a moose at 500 yards,a nd it's just as dead as if it were at 100 yards...;)

You can't go wrong with a .300 Weatherby Mag, super flat tragectory and in my opinion " the " rifle that puts it money where it's mouth is when the words " bang-flop " come up! I have never seen moose go down as fast with any other cartridge.
Whatever you decide on, just make sure that your brother does not have to clean it for you! :)

Large is such a loose term in firearm terms. I have friends that think the 7mm is a large caliber, I myself think the 378 or 460 are large calibers. Quite a difference in mind set. For the people out there that think the 7mm is large then I would have to agree, you would have the best for that size. Now with as little larger the 340 comes to mind, and for bigger than that the 378 is probably the best large caliber with the flattest trajectory you will find.
just my 2 cents

is it caliber or calibre? LOL. anyhow, what's a large flat shooting calibre, aside from the 300 win mag? I am considering something large like the 338wm, but my understanding it's very similar to the 30.06, which isn't as flat as the .308 or 300wm.

You are confused about the .308. Everything being equal, the .308 is slightly inferior to 30-06 ballistically, not superior. The .338 WM would be fairly close to both of those ballistically depending on the bullet weights involved.

If you want to learn about ballistics of different cartridges, a a factory ammo ballistics table is a good place to start. Try googling winchester, remington, or federal ammo ballistics.

Everything other than pleasantness. The 308 is superioraly more pleasant. :)

Define pleasant? If you mean recoil there's hardly any difference between a .308 and a 30-06. If you mean boy soldiering, then i suppose the .308 is just superioraly gooder for tacticoolness.

My 375 Weatherby shooting 270 spitzers at 3000 fps shot as flat as any rifle in the stable, other than my 270 Wby. It easily shot as falt a the 7 mag with 160s to 400 yd.

Without a doubt, the 375 RUM would do the same or a tad better.

Hi Ted,

I have a .375Wby built on a custom 602 and was wondering what rifle you used to get those speeds?

375 Wby and 270 grain spitzers at 3000 fps?
I own a pair of 375 Wby's and neither can get close to 3000fps...More like 2800-2850.

If you really are loading 3000fps sooner or later your rifle will turn into a pipe bomb.

Not trying to rain on your parade, just trying to save your life dude.

FWIW with the right load the 375 Ultra can make 3000fps.

BRNO ZKK 602, 26" barrel, primer pockets tight after five relaods (as per post #55).

In the meantime I will go back and check my notes. I know of several 375 Wby that get 2900 out of 24" barrels, including one belonging to a well-known member here. :)

Appreciate your concern.

Ted
